Michigan State University and Health Innovation Partners Break Ground on Medical Innovation Building

Michigan State University broke ground on the $85 million Doug Meijer Innovation Building in Grand Rapids in November of 2019. Designed by SmithGroup, the 205,000-sf facility will house multiple tenants including Spectrum Health, BAMF Health, and MSU's College of Human Medicine. The collaborative six-story building will enable the discovery and commercialization of new medical devices, artificial intelligence technologies, and treatments for cancer and dementia.

Florida Institute of Technology Plans Health Sciences Research Center

Florida Institute of Technology will break ground in spring of 2020 on the $18 million Health Sciences Research Center in Melbourne, Fla. Enabling the university to expand its biomedical engineering and premedical programs, the 61,000-sf facility will include a sophisticated anatomy lab with virtual dissection tables, an imaging suite with florescent and laser scanning microscopes, and labs for orthopedic research, tissue engineering, and computer modeling and simulation. The three-story center will also provide 20,000 sf of instructional and training space.

Mayo Clinic and United Therapeutics Open Discovery and Innovation Building

Mayo Clinic opened the  $32.4 million Discovery and Innovation Building in late August of 2019 in Jacksonville, Fla. Developed in collaboration with Lung Biotechnology PBC, a subsidiary of United Therapeutics Corporation, the 75,000-sf facility features three ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) suites to test and prepare lungs for transplantation. The three-story building also includes collaborative biomedical research space, an automated stem cell manufacturing hub, and a life science incubator with wet labs and co-working space.
