University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Plans Translational Research Build-Out

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will build out 33,660 nsf of shell space in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock to house translational research laboratories. Supported by $10.4 million in federal stimulus funding, the collaborative facility will support the development of mechanism-based, molecularly-targeted novel cancer therapeutics.

Tufts University Medford Plans Genome Facility

Tufts University Medford will renovate 19,627 nsf of existing wet lab space to house the Collaborative Cluster in Genome Structure and Developmental Patterning. Accommodating 70 scientists, the sustainably designed research facility will be contiguous with the Tufts Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology. The project is supported by $9.4 million in federal stimulus funding.

The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI) will open its 440,000-sf research facility in Houston in October of 2010. Housing 90 principal investigators and 800 staff, the interdisciplinary facility will include a GMP bioprocessing facility and an infectious disease research lab.

OMRF Initiates Translational Research Build-out

Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation will build out two floors of shell space in its existing 186,000-sf tower in Oklahoma City to house translational research on immune-based human disease. Supported by $7 million in stimulus funding, the project will include a 3,400-sf cryostorage facility, clinical space, and 16,600 sf of biomedical research laboratories.

Wistar Institute Plans Biomedical Research Tower

The Wistar Institute is planning to construct a biomedical research tower in Philadelphia. The seven-story facility will house five floors of research labs as well as meeting space and an auditorium. Designed by Ballinger, the project includes demolition of less than one third of Wistar’s existing 103,750-sf cancer research building and vivarium.

University of Liverpool Constructs Biomedical Research Facility

The University of Liverpool has awarded Shepherd Construction a £16.5 million contract to build the 5,950-sm Apex project. The interdisciplinary facility will house researchers studying infectious diseases, cancer, and digestive diseases. BREEAM sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will include a heat recovery system. Completion is expected in October of 2011.

UC Santa Barbara Opens Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering

The University of California, Santa Barbara began research at the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering in mid-2010. The $6.3 million laboratory was created by renovating 10,337 sf in the existing Biological Sciences 2 Facility. The collaborative stem cell research facility includes a core laboratory with a high-throughput sequencing apparatus, offices, conference rooms, and support. Additionally, the $6 million CIRM 2 (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine 2) is currently under construction with completion expected in June of 2011.

Texas A&M University Plans Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Build-Out

Texas A&M University will build out 12,680 asf of shell space in the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building in College Station to house laboratories, equipment, and cold room space. Accommodating research in structural biology, synthetic chemistry, drug discovery, molecular virology, and cancer biology, the project will support collaborative translational research. The facility is supported by $3.5 million in federal stimulus funding and will meet LEED Silver sustainable design standards.

Mount Desert Island Biological Lab Plans Center for Marine Functional Genomic Studies

The 13,267-sf facility will house multidisciplinary research labs, core facilities, and support space. The building will also provide research space for Maine's IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE). The project is supported by $3.8 million in federal stimulus funding.

Providing research laboratories for 31 faculty members, the contiguous research facility will be built in existing shell space on the eighth floor of an existing building. The project is supported by $11.8 million in federal stimulus funding. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Supported by $3 million in federal stimulus funding, the interdisciplinary project will house oral health research programs in areas including microbiology, molecular genetics, microbial informatics, and immunology.

George Washington University Plans Research Center for the Neglected Diseases of Poverty

George Washington University will renovate 25,400 sf of existing space in Washington to create the Research Center for the Neglected Diseases of Poverty. Housing translational research facilities for the development of new vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics, the center will support the study of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and neglected infections of poverty (NIPs) such as hookworm, schistosomiasis, opisthorchiasis, and toxoplasmosis. The multidisciplinary project is supported by $15 million in federal stimulus funding.

Duke University Creates Biomedical Research Vivarium

Duke University will create a biomedical research facility in the Fitzpatrick Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences in Durham, N.C. Supported by $4.2 million in federal stimulus funding, the project includes conversion of existing shell space to house a vivarium, research laboratories, and offices. Supporting translational research for the development of advanced therapeutics, the facility will provide 2,520 mouse cages, 480 rat cages, and 40 cages for other species.
