Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation is constructing an 186,000-sf research tower in Oklahoma City. Construction began on the facility in 2009 with completion expected by January of 2011. The $125 million tower will house 34 laboratories and clinical space for researchers studying autoimmune diseases. The National Institutes of Health awarded OMRF $7.03 million in March of 2010 for the construction of three floors totaling 8,200 sf, including a 3,400-sf cryostorage facility.

The University of Michigan Health System opened the $132 million Brehm Tower in Ann Arbor in March of 2010. Part of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center Complex, the 230,000-sf facility houses seven eye care clinics, surgical suites, and laboratories for ophthalmology and diabetes research. The eight-story facility was designed by TSA of Cambridge, Mass., and features an open lab layout and abundant natural lighting.

Ground was broken in March of 2010 on the $200 million South Australian Health and Medical Research Facility in Adelaide. Designed by Woods Bagot with RFD (Research Facilities Design) as laboratory design consultant, the 280,000-gsf translational research facility will include 135,000 nsf of laboratory space, a molecular imaging therapy unit, a cyclotron, an imaging suite, and an animal facility.

Charles Sturt University opened the $8.2 million Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory in Wagga Wagga in February of 2010. Providing space for animal disease detection and post-mortem examinations of livestock, the secure facility features a PC3 (physical containment level three) laboratory for infectious disease research on select agents such as anthrax, Q-fever, and psittacosis.

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research broke ground in February of 2010 the $179 million Smart State Medical Research Centre in Brisbane. Housing 20 new research laboratories for the study of emerging infectious diseases, genetics, cancer, mental illness, and vaccine development, the 13-story facility will accommodate 400 scientists and students. Completion is expected in early 2012.

Cord Blood America opened its 17,000-sf laboratory in Las Vegas in early 2010. The building houses facilities for stem cell storage, processing, testing, and cryogenic storage. Construction began on the project in August of 2009. A second construction phase will include expanded cryogenic facilities and a research laboratory.

The University of California Riverside celebrated the opening of the Stem Cell Core Facility (SCCF) in February of 2010. Located in Noel Keen Hall, the 2,000-sf facility features a Nikon BioStation CT incubator and advanced microscopy instrumentation. The project was funded by $2.8 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

The University of Miami was awarded $14.8 million in stimulus funding from the National Institutes of Health in February of 2010 to construct a neuroscience and health annex on its campus in Coral Gables, Fla. The 37,700-sf facility will provide advanced interdisciplinary research laboratories, including an fMRI suite. Built as an addition to the James M. Cox Jr. Science Center within the College of Arts and Sciences, the facility will support collaborative research with the Miller School of Medicine. Completion is expected in 2012.

Hampton University was awarded $8 million in stimulus funding from the National Institutes of Health in February of 2010 to construct a biomedical research center in Hampton, Va. The facility will house research space for the school’s programs in science, pharmacy, and nursing, as well as the existing Center for Advanced Medical Instrumentation. Construction will begin on the 20,000-sf center in spring of 2010.

Construction will begin in February of 2010 on the $110 million Garvan St Vincent's Cancer Centre in Sydney. Providing advanced cancer research and treatment facilities, the nine-story building is slated for completion in mid-2012.

The University of Florida's Institute on Aging will construct a 40,000-sf clinical and translational research complex in Gainesville. Supported by $15 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding awarded by the National Institutes of Health, the interdisciplinary project will provide laboratories, training rooms, conference rooms, and facilities for clinical research recruitment and assessment. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the four-story complex.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital will break ground in early 2010 on its third research facility in Columbus, Ohio. Part of an $840 million expansion plan, the $93 million Research III building will be constructed adjacent to the existing Wexner Institute for Pediatric Research and Research II. The six-story, 225,000-sf facility is slated for completion in 2012. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

Upstate Medical University will begin construction in mid-2010 on a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance in Syracuse, N.Y. Doubling existing research space, the 100,000-sf addition will house biomedical research labs, offices, and a vivarium. The facility will support interdisciplinary research on nervous system disorders such as addiction, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Completion is expected in 2013.

Ruhr University will begin construction in 2010 on the 65,000-sf European Protein Research Institute in Bochum, Germany. Supported by $53 million in funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the facility will support research on protein biomarkers for cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases. Completion is expected in 2013. The building will house approximately 150 researchers and staff.

The National Institutes of Health has selected Perkins & Will to design the second phase of the Porter Neuroscience Research Center in Bethesda, Md. The construction cost is estimated at $150 million. Slated for completion in the third quarter of 2013, the project will provide generic laboratories, offices, animal holding facilities, and conference rooms. The completed Porter Neuroscience Research Center will encompass 600,000 sf. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
