The Montreal Heart Institute is initiating a $24-million project to expand and renovate its Research Centre in Montreal, Canada. Slated for completion in 2008, the project will expand the south block, known as the Pavillon Jean-Louis Levesque, by 6,125 square meters on three floors. A catheterization and research space will be built, and the first three floors of the south block will be reorganized.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison opened its new 20,000-sf AIDS Vaccine Research Laboratory in the University Research Park on Sept. 16, 2005. The remodeled facility will house between 40 and 45 scientists and graduate students engaged in molecular biology, cell biology, and protein biochemistry research.
The University of Tennessee is developing the UT-Baptist Research Park in Memphis, Tenn. The 10-acre campus will consist of 1.2 million sf of bioscience laboratory, education, research, and incubator space. Baptist Memorial Health Care donated its property in the Memphis Medical District to create the campus. A 924,000-sf building will be imploded to enable new construction to begin in the second quarter of 2006. The project will be built in six phases over ten years.
McMaster University opened the $71-million Michael G. DeGroote Centre of Learning and Discovery on Sept. 22, 2005. Housing over 250 scientists that will work collaboratively to discover new gene-based medicines, the facility includes a specialized robotic microscope, one of three in the world. The University of Virginia will begin construction in fall 2005 on the $71-million Carter-Harrison Medical Research Building (MRB) at its main Charlottesville campus. Housing approximately 300 scientists and laboratory staff grouped in 60 research teams, the 189,000-gsf facility was designed by HDR Engineering of Alexandria, Va.
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is planning to construct a $40-million research laboratory in Manhasset, N.Y. Ground will be broken on the four-story, 55,658-sf facility in November 2005. Sited on the 57.8-acre North Shore University Hospital Campus, the new wing will increase the footprint and research capacity of the existing Boas-Marks Biomedical Research Pavilion. Completion is expected in two years.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is planning to construct a $300-million facility in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in Boston. The 400,000-sf complex will house research labs and clinical outpatient treatment suites with ground floor retail. Designed by Portland, Ore.-base Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, the facility will increase Dana-Farber's footprint by one-third. Completion is expected by 2011.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center dedicated Phase II of the Hamilton Eye Institute in Memphis, Tenn., on Sept. 26, 2005. The second phase of the $63-million facility is comprised of 28,000 sf of laboratories; 20,000 sf of examination rooms; 10,000 sf of education and training facilities; 8,000 sf of office space; an ophthalmic ambulatory surgery center; and a 99-seat auditorium.
The University of Hawaii opened a new $150-facility at the John A. Burns School of Medicine on Sept. 30, 2005. The building consists of eighty percent laboratory space, including a BSL-3 suite, for researchers and programs relocated from the UH-Manoa campus. Those programs include Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases; the Cancer Research Center; Cell and Molecular Biology; Developmental and Reproductive Biology; Neuroscience; and Genomics.
Clemson University is planning to construct a $6-million incubator facility in Pendleton, S.C. Sited in the Clemson Research Park, the 40,000-sf Innovation Center will be located adjacent to Clemson's Advanced Materials Research Laboratory. Additionally, Clemson has allotted $10.3 million in funding to create a research campus for the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI) in North Charleston on the former Charleston Naval Base.
Baylor College of Medicine celebrated the groundbreaking of the Margaret M. Alkek Building for Biomedical Research in Houston on Sept. 16, 2005. The 203,000-gsf, eight-story facility will feature flexible lab and office space designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in areas including cardiovascular sciences, diabetes, cancer, pharmacogenomics, imaging, informatics, and proteomics. Completion is expected in May 2007.
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) opened its new $145-million College of Medicine Research Building in September 2005. Providing state-of-the-art laboratories for biomedical researchers, the 325,000-sf building represents a 15 percent increase in UIC's total research space. The eight-story facility will bring together researchers in the fields of neuroscience, cardiovascular disease, cancer, women's health, and immunology/transplantation.
The University of Virginia Health System broke ground in September 2005 on a $70.7-million medical building on its Charlottesville campus. The 102,000-sf facility will accommodate research on vaccine therapy, immunology, infectious diseases, cancer, and biotechnology. The building will house 240 scientists working in 60 research teams.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) has completed construction of the 145,000-sf Child Health Institute in New Brunswick, N.J. Part of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of UMDNJ, the $72 million facility was developed in partnership with the New Brunswick Development Corporation. Designed by Princeton-based The Hillier Group, the comprehensive biomedical research center will accommodate research on the prevention, treatment and cure of childhood diseases with an emphasis on translational medicine.
Seoul National University began construction in August 2005 on the $25-billion won Hwang Woo-suk Research Center in Kwanak, Korea. The state-of-the-art medical bioengineering laboratory will accommodate research in primate studies, molecular biology, cell transplants, animal cloning, and stem cell research. Completion is expected in October 2006.
