The University of Kentucky Designs Albert B. Chandler Hospital

Published 7/31/2006

The University of Kentucky (UK) has unveiled the design for the $450-million Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Slated for completion in 2010, the new one million-sf hospital will be built by Turner Construction Company in two phases to allow for a step-by-step replacement of the existing hospital. The facility is designed for maximum flexibility and includes emergency care, intervention care, surgery, imaging, and two towers of private patient rooms. The Chandler replacement hospital is the centerpiece of a $2.5 billion, twenty year plan to build an academic medical campus on the south side of campus. The project will include: a $120-million pharmacy building with research space; biomedical research buildings; a shared Health Sciences Learning Center; and buildings for the colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Health Sciences, Public Health, and Dentistry. The first phase, the UK College of Pharmacy building, is slated to begin construction in 2007 and reach completion in late 2009. The University of Kentucky houses six medical colleges on its campus.
