New Belgium Brewing Builds Wind-Powered Facility

New Belgium Brewing Company has selected Swinerton Builders to construct a 76,000-sf bottling and packaging plant in Fort Collins, Colo. The nation's first wind-powered brewery, the $30-million steel and concrete facility will house an assembly line, cold storage, a warehouse and a shipping dock. Designed by BNIM Architects of Kansas City, Mo., the project is expected to begin construction in early 2006.

Igloo Products Expands Katy Facility

Igloo Products Corp. has consolidated its corporate headquarters and Houston-based distribution operations in a new facility in Katy, Texas. Comprised of an 87,000-sf office site and an 805,000-sf manufacturing and distribution facility, the building includes a high-bay warehouse with special fire protection attributes and a large manufacturing space with the complex mechanical infrastructure to support plastic extrusion molding stations.

Gehl Expands Yankton Manufacturing Plant

Gehl Co., based in West Bend, Wisc., is engaged in an $8.7 million expansion of its Yankton, S.D., manufacturing facility. Adding capacity for production, manufacturing, and equipment, the 49,000-sf addition will be complemented by a 4,000-sf research and development area. Gehl Co. manufactures telescopic handlers and pavers.

Sysco Plans Selma Distribution Center

Sysco Corp. is planning to invest $37 million in a new distribution center in Selma, N.C. The 300,000-sf facility will be sited on 80 acres in Johnston County. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2005.

Manitowoc Co. Builds Crane Manufacturing Plant in China

The Manitowoc Co. is planning to construct a new crane manufacturing facility in Zhangjiagang, China. Replacing and more than doubling the footprint of an existing 120,000-sf factory that produces Potain power cranes, the project is slated for completion in early 2006. Additionally, construction is currently under way on a 190,000-sf manufacturing and training facility near Hangzhou, China, to expand The Manitowoc Co.s' ice, beverage, and refrigeration equipment markets. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2005.

Shell Shared Services Asia Completes Business Operations Center

Shell Shared Services Asia-BV has completed construction of its business operations center in Makati City, Philippines. The 35,200-sf facility was designed by Barone Design Group to support key internal business and customer service functions and will accommodate 288 workspaces. The facility is located on two floors in the RCBC Plaza.

ORAFOL USA Plans Georgia Facility

German firm ORAFOL USA will construct a 20,000-sf facility in the Interstate Centre industrial park in Bryan County, Ga., to house its U.S. headquarters and first manufacturing operations outside of Germany. Slated for completion in 2006, the facility represents a $45 million investment over two development phases. The project will create sixty new jobs by year-end 2008. ORAFOL USA, a subsidiary of Oranienberg-based ORAFOL Klebetechnik GmbH, produces PVC films for use in reflective films, adhesive tapes, and graphics products.

Axygen Relocates to Union City

Axygen Scientific , a manufacturer of laboratory materials, is relocating its corporate headquarters to a new $9.9-million custom built facility in Union City, Calif. The facility at the new site, previously the home of Crown Cork & Seal Co., was demolished and rebuilt. The warehouse is sited near to the company's old location in Union City.

New Millennium Building Systems Breaks Ground on Steel Fabrication Facility

New Millennium Building Systems has broken ground on a 252,000-sf steel fabrication plant in Lake City, Fla. The annual production capacity of the $30-million facility will be approximately 70,000 tons of joists, trusses, and girders, and nearly 50,000 tons of steel roof and floor decking. New Millennium is a subsidiary of Indiana-based Steel Dynamics Inc.

FormFactor Opens Livermore Headquarters

Chip-equipment maker FormFactor opened its new $55-million headquarters and manufacturing facility in Livermore, Calif., in October of 2004. Doubling FormFactor’s previous footprint, the 135,000-sf building will increase probe card production and enable the company’s development of probe cards for different types of chips. Employees will be shifted to the new facility incrementally; an additional building housing a cafeteria and a gym is still in development at the site.

Rheem Manufacturing Constructs Randleman Distribution Facility

Rheem Manufacturing Co. has initiated construction on a $6.1 million facility in the West Randleman Business Park in Randleman, N.C. Housing Rheem's Air Conditioning division, the 180,000-sf distribution facility will serve as the North American distribution headquarters for the company's replacement-parts operations. Completion is expection by March 2005. Future plans describe expansion of the facility by an additional 72,000 sf. The project team includes three Greensboro-based firms: Samet Corp.

Genera Corp. Completes Aurora Facility

La Palma, Calif.-based Genera Corporation has completed its new 192,600-sf facility in Aurora, Illinois. Architectural services for the design/build project were provided by Ware Malcomb; Duke Construction of Lisle, Illinois, was the general contractor. The building houses warehouse space and 6,200-sf of office space. Genera is a manufacturer of automotive replacement lamps.

Lear Corp. Opens Plant at Ford's Chicago Campus

Lear Corp ., a Southfield, Mich.-based manufacturer of auto parts, is opening a $4-million, 53,760-sf facility at the Ford Motor Co.’s manufacturing campus in Chicago . The plant will produce headliners and package trays for several Ford models. Lear is one of twelve auto suppliers located in Ford’s 155-acre supplier manufacturing campus.

LEO Inc. Constructs Louisville Steel Plant

Pittsburgh-based Leo Inc. is planning to construct a $383.6 million steel processing plant in Louisville, Ky. Sited on 80 acres, the 600,000-sf facility will convert slabs of steel into coil form for use in manufacturing and other industries. Ground will be broken on the plant in September or October of 2004; MCC Corp . of Beijing will oversee construction. Completion is expected within 24 months. The plant will process 1.5 million tons of steel annually.
