Translational Research Institute Builds Brisbane Facility

The Translational Research Institute (TRI) began construction on its $360 million medical complex in Brisbane in October of 2010. Located adjacent to Princess Alexandra Hospital, the TRI will house integrated facilities for the discovery, production, clinical testing, and manufacture of new biopharmaceuticals and therapies. The complex was designed by Wilson Architects and Donovan Hill with Watpac Construction as general contractor. Occupancy is expected in October of 2012.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Attains LEED Gold

Jersey Shore University Medical Center was awarded LEED Gold sustainable design certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in September of 2010. The facility features energy efficient building systems, recycled materials, and 100 percent filtered outside air. The $300 million, 400,000-sf Northwest Pavilion uses 30 percent less water than a conventional facility, saving 1,314,000 gallons per year. Two gas-fired co-generation units convert onsite waste into steam heat, resulting in a 32% reduction in energy costs.

University of Maryland Opens Pharmacy Hall Addition

The University of Maryland, Baltimore opened the $62 million Pharmacy Hall Addition in October of 2010. The seven-story facility houses classrooms, lecture halls, experiential learning suites, a robotic dispensing lab, and translational research labs for pharmacogenetics, nanomedicine, and drug discovery. The 128,951-gsf (66,115-asf) building is equipped for distance learning. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility, which features a heat recovery system and energy efficient lighting.

Duke University School of Medicine Breaks Ground on Learning Center

Duke University School of Medicine will break ground on the $53 million Learning Center on October 15, 2010. Located on the university’s West Campus in Durham, N.C., the six-story, 84,000-sf building will provide a 400-seat auditorium,  clinical teaching labs, simulation suites, and advanced classrooms for team-based medical education. Completion is expected in 2013.

Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Opens in Milwaukee

The $417 million Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital opened in Milwaukee in October of 2010. The nine-story facility was designed by HOK and built by CG Schmidt-Barton Malow. The project provides 312 inpatient beds and houses the McKeithan Testing & Treatment Institute, the Heart & Vascular Institute, the Orthopaedic & Neuroscience Institute, the Regional Burn Center, and the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Institute (SHRI). Ground was broken on the project in 2006.

Kaiser Permanente Opens Santa Rosa Expansion

Kaiser Permanente opened a $233 million expansion of its Santa Rosa hospital in October of 2010. The five-story tower houses an expanded emergency department and ICU as well as inpatient care. The project was designed by TLCD Architecture and built by Harbison-Mahony-Higgins Builders.

UMass Medical School Opens Ambulatory Care Center

The University of Massachusetts Medical School opened the 258,000-sf Ambulatory Care Center in Worcester in September of 2010. Designed by Payette, the nine-story project provides integrated facilities for patient care, clinical research, and medical education. The building is located at UMass Memorial Medical Center and features energy-efficient HVAC systems, abundant natural light, and occupancy sensors.

St. John's Health System Plans Orthopedic Hospital

St. John’s Health System is planning to break ground in late 2010 on a $104 million orthopedic hospital in Springfield, Ill. The 150,000-sf facility will provide 48 beds and is slated for completion by early 2013. The hospital will include advanced surgical suites for joint replacement.

University of Missouri Health Care Builds Cancer Treatment Center

University of Missouri Health Care began construction in September of 2010 on a $210 million facility in Columbia. The eight-story, 300,000-sf addition will provide 90 private patient rooms and 12 surgical suites. The Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will occupy two floors in the building. Completion is expected in late 2012.

University of New Mexico Plans Rio Rancho Teaching Hospital

The University of New Mexico is planning to build the $193 million Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho. The 200,000-sf teaching hospital will include a Level III/IV emergency and trauma center, general surgery, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, behavioral health, and 68 inpatient beds. A 40,000-sf medical office building will also be constructed.

Medical College of Wisconsin Plans Teaching Facility

The Medical College of Wisconsin will break ground in spring of 2011 on a three-story, 100,000-sf teaching facility at Regional Medical Center in Wauwatosa. The $29 million building will feature simulation suites, anatomy labs, and team-based learning areas. Occupancy is expected in July of 2012.

University of California to Break Ground on Mission Bay Hospital

The University of California will break ground in December of 2010 on a $1.52 billion hospital in San Francisco. Located on the Mission Bay biomedical campus, the 878,000-sf facility will provide women’s, children’s, and cancer care services. The 289-bed hospital will support translational research and is slated for occupancy in 2014.

Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre will open its new translational research laboratory in October of 2010. The $15.8 million facility is located on the expanded third floor of the Cancer Centre and includes drug development and testing suites for advanced biomedical therapies. The project is supported by $9.5 million in federal funding.

University Hospital Expands in San Antonio

University Hospital is planning a $900 million expansion of its San Antonio medical center. A $778 million, 1 million-sf hospital tower is slated for occupancy in 2014. The sustainably designed facility will feature 420 private rooms. Existing facilities for surgery and emergency care will be significantly expanded, and the Robert B. Green Clinic will undergo a $121 million renovation and expansion.
