Rady Children's Hospital Opens Acute Care Pavilion

Rady Children’s Hospital and Health Center completed construction of the $260 million Acute Care Pavilion in August of 2010. Located in Kearney Mesa, Calif., the 279,000-sf facility provides 72 private patient rooms, 84 medical-surgical beds, 16 operating rooms, a neonatal ICU, and a cancer center. The four-story project was designed by Anshen + Allen of San Francisco and built by McCarthy of St. Louis. Ground was broken on the project in December of 2007 and occupancy is expected in October of 2010.

UC Davis Medical Center Opens Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion

UC Davis Medical Center opened the $425 million Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion in Sacramento in July of 2010. Construction began on the 472,000-sf facility in November of 2004. Built with three stories above grade and one story below, the pavilion provides an emergency room, a 12-bed burn unit, a surgical intensive care unit, and pathology, radiology, and cardiology services. The project was designed by Gordon H. Chong & Partners of San Francisco.

Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center Expands in Thousand Oaks

Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center is initiating a $245 million expansion of its hospital campus in Thousand Oaks, Calif. A four-story patient tower providing 60 beds will be built and a fourth floor will be added to an existing building. The project will enable Los Robles to comply with state seismic safety regulations. A new parking structure will also be constructed.

Kaiser Permanente Breaks Ground on San Leandro Medical Center

Kaiser Permanente broke ground on the 436,000-sf San Leandro Medical Center on July 12, 2010. Replacing Kaiser’s existing Hayward facility, the six-story acute care hospital will provide 264 beds, 10 operating rooms, an emergency department, a neonatal ICU, and outpatient care. Completion is expected in 2013.

Shriners Plans Montreal Replacement Hospital

Shriners Hospitals for Children is planning to construct a $100 million replacement hospital in Montreal. The facility will house 2,300 sm of research space, 22 private patient rooms, and four surgical suites. Completion is expected by 2014.

CoreCare Plans Rehabilitation R&D Facility

CoreCare will break ground in fall of 2010 on a $150 million rehabilitation R&D facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The nine-story, 300,000-sf project will support research on spinal cord injuries and is expected to reach completion in 2012. The facility will seek designation as a National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research Model System Center. The LEED-certified building will house inpatient care, a surgical center, a research laboratory, a training facility, and medical offices. The project architect is Aguirre Roden of Dallas.

Concorde Gruppe and Healthcare of Today Partner on Stem Cell Facility

Concorde Gruppe GmbH is partnering with Healthcare of Today to build a €50 million stem cell research and treatment facility in Adunatii Copaceni, Romania. Completion is expected in mid-2012. The facility will utilize patient stem cells in medical treatments and will promote innovation in the development of advanced stem cell therapies.

The $52 million Jamestown Regional Medical Center will open in fall of 2011 in Jamestown, N.D. Construction began on the three-story, 130,000-sf facility in September of 2009. The hospital was designed by BWBR Architects of St. Paul and will provide 25 inpatient beds.

Erie County Medical Center Plans Renal Care Addition

Erie County Medical Center will construct a $2.1 million addition to the Center of Excellence for Renal Disease and Transplant in Buffalo, N.Y. The project will expand the 18,000-sf facility to 25,000 sf and will provide 12 additional outpatient dialysis stations. Construction will begin in late 2010. The total project cost of the Center of Excellence for Renal Disease and Transplant is $24 million.

Community Health System of Tennessee Breaks Ground on Porter Hospital

Community Health System of Tennessee broke ground on the $225 million Porter Hospital in July of 2010 in Valparaiso, Ind. The five-story, 420,000-sf facility will provide approximately 240 beds. The site work contractor is Dyer Construction with Robins and Morton of Birmingham, Ala., as general contractor.

Laguna Honda Hospital Opens Replacement Facility

Laguna Honda Hospital opened its $585 million replacement facility in San Francisco in June of 2010. Designed by Anshen+Allen, Stantec, and Gordon H. Chong, the 850,000-sf hospital provides skilled nursing care for up to 780 residents. The construction manager for the project was Turner Construction. The hospital houses acute care, assisted living, hospice, rehabilitation, senior nutrition, and adult day care health.

Carolinas Medical Center Opens Lincolnton Replacement Hospital

Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln will open its $90 million, 182,000-sf replacement hospital on July 10, 2010. Located in Lincolnton, N.C., the 101-bed facility provides critical care, emergency, surgical suites, imaging, and a birthing center. The project was designed by Davis Stokes Collaborative Architects of Brentwood, Tenn. Construction began on the facility in 2008.

Bluewater Health Opens Sarnia Addition

Bluewater Health opened a 325,000-sf addition at its hospital in Sarnia, Ontario, in July of 2010. The seven-story Norman Building provides surgical suites, an emergency department, acute care, and maternal, infant and child care. Construction began on the addition in October of 2007 with construction reaching completion in April of 2010. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Department of Veterans Affairs Breaks Ground on New Orleans VA Hospital

The Department of Veterans Affairs broke ground on an $800 million VA hospital in New Orleans in late June of 2010. Slated for completion in 2013, the medical complex will replace facilities damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The 1.7 million-sf project will include 200 inpatient rooms, 300 exam rooms, and 20 surgical suites. The hospital will also provide emergency, rehabilitation, and mental health services.
