United Regional Health Care Opens Bridwell Tower

United Regional Health Care opened the $70 million Bridwell Tower in Wichita Falls, Texas, in August of 2009. The five-story, 179,000-sf facility features a hybrid endovascular suite and includes facilities for general surgery, labor and delivery, diagnostic imaging, and pediatric care. The tower is linked to the main hospital campus by a sky bridge. Construction began on the tower in August 2007.

University at Buffalo Partners with Kaleida Health on Joint Research Facility

The University of Buffalo and Kaleida Health broke ground on a $291 million clinical care and research facility on August 3, 2009. Located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the ten-story, 600,000-sf project includes Kaleida Health’s Global Vascular Institute, the University at Buffalo’s Center for Clinical and Translational Research, and a biosciences incubator for the university. The collaborative facility will connect to Buffalo General Hospital and is slated for completion by late 2011.

James Haley Veterans Medical Center Completes Expansion

A $12 million surgical suite expansion at James Haley Veterans Medical Center in Tampa was completed in summer of 2009. The 40,000-sf project included the construction of a $7.5 million, 25,000-sf addition to the hospital’s pathology laboratory. A $3.5 million, 12,000-sf renovation and expansion of the emergency department was also completed. The design architect for both projects was VOA Associates.

West Cumberland Hospital Plans Redevelopment

West Cumberland Hospital has selected Laing O’Rourke as the general contractor for an extensive redevelopment of its hospital campus in Hensingham, U.K. Groundwork will begin in late 2009 on the £100 million project with construction commencing in 2010. The sustainably-designed facility will include an emergency department, surgical suites, inpatient care, and an outpatient clinic.

Fort St. John Hospital Breaks Ground on Healthcare Campus

Fort St. John Hospital broke ground on a $298 million healthcare campus in July of 2009. Located on 40 acres in Fort St. John, B.C., Canada, the $298 million project is comprised of a 55-bed acute care hospital and a 123-bed, 54,000-sf residential care facility. The replacement hospital will feature an expanded emergency department, two new operating rooms, an endoscopy suite, and maternity care rooms. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which is slated for completion in spring of 2012.

Fortis Healthcare Builds Gurgaon Medicity

Fortis Healthcare is building the Fortis International Institute of Medical Sciences on 10.7 acres in Gurgaon, India. The 1.5 million-sf first phase of construction will house between 250 and 400 beds for cancer, trauma, and pediatric care. Construction began in August of 2007 with occupancy slated for November of 2010. Subsequent construction phases will support other multi-specialty departments with a total of 1,000 beds.

Pennsylvania State University Opens Hershey Cancer Institute

Pennsylvania State University celebrated the opening of the $121 million Hershey Cancer Institute on June 26, 2009. The 176,000-sf facility is located on the Hershey Medical Center Campus in University Park, Pa. Designed by Payette of Boston, the translational research facility integrates clinical treatment and medical research. The project team included associate architect Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions, construction manager Gilbane Building, and MEP engineer Bard, Rao + Athanas (BR+A).

Saratoga Hospital Opens Emergency Center

Saratoga Hospital opened the $30 million, 33,000-sf Alfred Z. Solomon Emergency Center in Saratoga Springs in July of 2009. The renovated and expanded two-story ER features 36 private treatment rooms, an imaging suite, and new nursing stations. A second phase of construction is ongoing and will include a new lobby, waiting room, and observation unit. The Alfred Z. Solomon Emergency Center will accommodate 50,000 patient visits annually.

Health Alliance Opens West Chester Medical Center

Health Alliance opened the $116 million West Chester Medical Center in July of 2009 in West Chester Township, Ohio. Construction began on the 385,000-sf, 162-bed facility in July of 2006. Comprised of a five-story acute care hospital and a medical office complex, the project was designed by RTKL and built by Mortenson-Messer Healthcare Construction. The project team also included MEP engineer Fosdick & Hilmer and landscape architect Vivian Llambi & Associates.

Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit opened a $32 million expansion of its intensive care unit in July of 2009. Housing 156 beds, the two-story addition is located on top of the hospital’s west pavilion. Sutter Healthcare Breaks Ground on Eden Medical Center

Sutter Healthcare officially broke ground on the $320 million Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Calif., in July of 2009. Housing 130 private inpatient beds, the 230,000-sf, seven-story hospital will include emergency, trauma, neuroscience, and maternity facilities. A 34-bed universal care unit will provide acute care, lab services, pre- and post-surgery care, radiation therapy, and cardiology services. An adjacent 80,000-sf, four-story medical office building will also be constructed at the site.

Oakland University Plans Human Health Building

Oakland University is planning to build the $62 million Human Health Building in Rochester, Mich. Housing the departments of nursing and health sciences, the five-story, 160,000-sf facility is slated for completion in 2012. The Human Health Building will include classrooms, seminar rooms, an interactive media center, physical therapy clinics, simulation labs, clinical labs, computer labs, and distance learning facilities. Robinson Memorial Completes Streetsboro Health Center

Robinson Memorial Hospital completed the $21 million Robinson Health Center in Streetsboro, Ohio, in July of 2009. The 75,000-sf outpatient facility will house medical offices, MRI, CT, and X-ray imaging, and an urgent care center. General contractor RMH Construction began work on the three-story building in April of 2008. The Robinson Health Center will accommodate approximately 100,000 patient visits annually.

William Carey University Builds College of Osteopathic Medicine

William Carey University is building the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hattiesburg, Miss. Slated for occupancy in fall of 2010, the first phase is comprised of a 46,000-sf facility housing classrooms and laboratories. The second and third phases will reach completion in 2014 providing teaching amphitheaters, conference rooms, and administrative offices. The total construction cost for the project is $11 million.
