A $334 million replacement hospital will be built in Fort Riley, Kan., to replace Irwin Army Community Hospital. The project includes a 263,000-sf hospital, a 289,000-sf clinic, a central energy plant, and support. The joint-venture preconstruction team is Walton Construction Co. of Kansas City and Balfour Beatty Construction of Dallas. Construction will begin in fall of 2009 with completion expected in spring of 2012.
Cox South Hospital broke ground on its new 78,000-sf emergency department in May of 2009. Located in Springfield, Mo., the 62-bed facility will include universal exam rooms, trauma bays, observation rooms, OB-GYN suites, psychiatric areas, and a pharmacy. The $53 million facility will open in August of 2010 and is being built by Beck-Walton, a joint venture of Walton Construction Co. and the Beck Group of Dallas.
Imperial College London, in partnership with Imperial College Healthcare NHS, broke ground on a £99 million biomedical research facility in April of 2009. Slated for completion in late 2011, the six-story building will be part of the planned Academic Health Science Center in London. Housing 450 researchers, the facility will provide laboratories for translational research in cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, and obesity.
The U.S. Department of Energy announced the launch of the Hospital Energy Alliance (HEA) in April of 2009. The HEA is an industry-led partnership between the DOE and national healthcare sector leaders to promote the integration of advanced energy efficiency and renewable technologies in hospital design, construction, retrofit, operations, and maintenance.
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is building the $327 million Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. Construction began on the 613,512-sf facility in February of 2008 with completion expected in 2011. The project team includes FKP Architects and Self Tucker Architects with Skanska USA Building as general contractor.
Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is building the Starkey Medical Tower in New Port Richey, Fla. Featuring entirely private rooms, the three-story inpatient facility will include a cardiac unit, a medical surgical unit, an intensive care unit, and a respiratory care department. Completion is slated for early 2010. The new patient wing is part of a $49 million expansion and renovation project that will double the size of the existing hospital campus.
The United States Army will begin construction in mid-2009 on a $708 million military hospital in Fort Hood, Texas. Supported by funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the replacement hospital will provide comprehensive ambulatory and ancillary care services. The project cost includes $87 million for design and $621 million for construction. Completion is expected in 2011.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is engaged in a $74 million expansion of its hospital campus in Portland, Ore. A five-story facility is being built on top of an existing building by construction manager and general contractor Andersen Construction. The expansion broke ground in September of 2008 and is slated for completion in spring of 2010. The project team includes architect SRG Partnership and Catena Consulting Engineers. Upon completion of the addition, the existing hospital will be renovated.
Summa Health System will begin construction in spring of 2009 on the $20 million Health Center at Lake Medina in Montville Township, Ohio. The three-story, 100,000-sf facility will house an ambulatory surgery center, comprehensive outpatient services, and a medical office building. The project broke ground in November of 2008 and completion is expected in spring of 2010.
Sanford Health will break ground in mid-2009 on the $50 million Sanford Regional Hospital Aberdeen in South Dakota. Slated for completion in 2011, the 105,000-sf, 36-bed facility will include technology rich surgical suites, a cardiac catheterization lab, imaging, emergency, and labor and delivery. The hospital will feature an integrated design to promote optimum patient safety and accessibility.
Vedanta University is planning to build a 500-bed academic medical center in Bhubaneswar, India. The Rs 400 crore teaching and research hospital will accommodate multiple medical specialties when it opens in 2011.
Harvard Medical School will build a 350,000-sf academic facility in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The building will serve as Harvard Medical School Dubai Center’s permanent home at Dubai Healthcare City. The facility will include a 340-seat auditorium, instructional facilities, and a simulation center for Harvard’s Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research. The general contractor for the project is Al Naboodah Construction Group.
Kaiser Permanente opened the $600 million, 400-bed Los Angeles Medical Center in early April of 2009. The 792,000-sf, 400-bed replacement hospital features spacious operating rooms and is designed to minimize patient transit time within the facility. Construction began on the project in 2003. The hospital will accommodate 750,000 patient visits annually.
Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital opened the $25 million Quentin & Elisabeth Alexander Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Cleveland in March of 2009. The technology-rich facility features a surgical procedure table designed for newborns and premature babies, individual rooms with parental sleep accommodations, and 38 incubators. Expanding the hospital’s NICU space from 8,000 sf to 30,000 sf, the sustainably designed project supports healing by integrating advanced technology into a soothing environment.
Capital Health has awarded Skanska USA Building a $134 million contract to build a 968,760-sf replacement hospital in Hopewell Township, N.J. The 237-bed, two-building complex is slated for completion in October of 2011. The Hopewell hospital will provide cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, dialysis, trauma care, mental health, women’s services, and pediatric care.
