University of North Carolina Partners with Dole to Create Research Campus

The University of North Carolina is partnering with Dole Food Company, North Carolina State University, developer David Murdock, and other institutions to create the 350-acre North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. Upon completion, the campus will comprise over one million square feet of office and laboratory space as well as commercial, retail, and residential facilities. The first 330,000-sf building will include:

  • The 60,000-sf Core Laboratory with lab and office suites including facilities supporting DNA-sequencing, micro-arrays, and mass spectrometry.
  • The 30,000-sf Contract Manufacturing biogenic fermentation facility, a sterile GMP environment
  • The 10,000-sf Dole Research Institute
  • 75,000 sf of multi-tenant space

Other planned facilities include:

  • The North Carolina State University Institute for Advanced Fruit and Vegetable Science, comprised of 50,000 sf of laboratory space and 100,000 sf of greenhouse facilities
  • A 1000-seat auditorium and conference facility with a 125-room hotel
  • 40,000 sf of potential biotechnology training space for the North Carolina Community College System
  • A 50,000-sf facility for Cabarrus Family Medicine
  • Between 25,000 sf and 50,000 sf for Northeast Medical Center specialty care programs
  • A facility for Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp), a genomic testing company based in Burlington, N.C.
  • A private high school for girls with specific math and science curriculum
