Genzyme Corp. opened the $125 million Science Center in Framingham, Mass., on September 22, 2008. Designed by ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, the facility has attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification. The six-story, 180,000-sf building houses laboratories and offices united by a central atrium. The facility will house 350 employees engaged in cardiovascular, cancer, immunology, and neurology research. Featuring abundant natural light, an advanced HVAC system, high-efficiency fume hoods, and low-flow water fixtures, the Science Center will use 26 percent less energy and 40 percent less water than comparable conventional facilities. The project team includes BR+A Consulting Engineers and general contractor Bovis Lend Lease. Genzyme is also constructing a $250 million, 230,000-sf cell culture manufacturing facility on the Framingham campus; completion is slated for 2011. In Allston, Genzyme will complete a $150 million expansion of its cell culture manufacturing facility in 2009.
