Vassar College Completes Integrated Science Commons

Published 5/19/2016

Vassar College completed construction in spring of 2016 on the $125 million Integrated Science Commons in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Designed by Ennead Architects, the project features the 82,000-sf Bridge for Laboratory Sciences, a teaching and research building that spans a ravine. Supporting programs in earth science, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, cognitive science, physics, and psychology, the facility accommodates the collaborative Earth and Environment Lab which includes two faculty research labs, a shared teaching lab, a cleanroom, a coldroom, and a student-faculty joint use lab. The Bridge also houses the Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory as well as a central atrium with a café that acts as a campus destination. Three adjacent historic buildings were renovated to provide an additional 75,000 sf of space for classrooms, group study areas, cognitive testing suites, and research labs for physics and computer science. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which includes an advanced HVAC system with precise temperature and humidity controls for lab spaces. Ground was broken on the project in 2013.
