North Central College Opens Science Center

Published 3/28/2017

North Central College celebrated the opening of the $60 million Science Center in March of 2017. Located in Naperville, Ill., the four-story, 125,000-sf facility will support progressive pedagogies for STEM education programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Designed by Holabird & Root, the multidisciplinary building provides 18 teaching labs, 16 research labs, 15 seminar classrooms, 19 student gathering areas, 53 faculty and staff offices, a lecture hall, and a greenhouse. Bringing all of the sciences together in a single location, the facility houses the departments of biology, physics, mathematics, computer science, psychology, neuroscience, and exercise science. Research Facilities Design (RFD) was the laboratory programming and design consultant for the center, which was built by Bulley & Andrews with CBRE as project manager. The sustainably designed facility features electrochromic glass that changes tint based on weather conditions, a highly efficient HVAC system, and a 1,000-gallon cistern for rainwater collection. Ground was broken on the project in May of 2015.
