The University of Leicester began construction in March of 2018 on an expansion of its existing student union building in the United Kingdom. Designed by Shepheard Epstein Hunter, the mixed-use project includes the addition of a four-story extension to the east wing which will house a large food court, social learning spaces, and an informatics labs to support programs in information science. A new façade and entrance will also be created to enhance campus connectivity. Stepnell has been awarded the £13.1 million construction contract for the project, which is slated for completion in August of 2019. The extension is expected to attain BREEAM Very Good sustainable design certification and will feature advanced building systems and solar shading technologies.
