The University of British Columbia opened the renovated and expanded Life Science Teaching Laboratories in January of 2020 in Vancouver. Designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and HDR, the interdisciplinary complex provides active learning environments, classrooms, study spaces, faculty offices, and state-of-the-art teaching and research labs. Consolidating all undergraduate life and biological science programs in a single integrated location, the collaborative facility accommodates courses in botany, zoology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiological sciences, microbiology, and immunology. Featuring biophilic design elements and an inviting gateway courtyard, the $91.4 million project includes 59,093 sf of renovated space, 57,565 sf of updated space, and 97,617 sf of new construction. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the complex, which leverages advanced building systems and thermal comfort technologies to achieve optimal energy performance.
