James Cook University began construction in March of 2021 on the AUD$94 million Technology Innovation Complex in Townsville, Queensland. Designed by KIRK Architects in association with i4 Architecture and Charles Wright Architects, the four-story, 101,180-sf building will provide flexible multimodal environments for STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The ground floor will feature highly visible facilities for hands-on learning including an active maker space and teaching labs for earth and environmental sciences. The sustainably designed structure will leverage passive ventilation systems and external solar control technologies to optimize energy performance and promote occupant comfort. BESIX Watpac is the construction manager for the complex, which is slated for occupancy in January of 2023. The project will act as the centerpiece of a planned innovation neighborhood where students and faculty can engage in collaborative research with industry partners.
