In preparation for Generation Alpha's in the higher education environment in three years, Stantec is unveiling valuable insights for architects and interior designers on these cohorts’ expectations for the facilities they will live and learn in. Gen Alpha, or those born between 2010 and 2024, are the first to have grown up in the digital age since birth. They are characterized by their global connectivity, awareness of diversity, and preference for a personalized and flexible experience on campus.
Three key approaches can guide projects into alignment with this emergent stakeholder group. First, buildings tailored to this socially and emotionally mindful generation must incorporate an understanding of neurodiversity and mental health needs: for example through the creation of sensory zones and respite rooms. Second, the most successful educational venues will become increasingly technology-infused, offering the opportunity for interactive and immersive learning methods like virtual reality and gamification. Initial steps could comprise widespread electrical outlet availability, hybrid pedagogical models, and the integration of artificial intelligence.
Finally, inclusive design elements may also feature dimmable LED lighting, acoustic attenuation, conscious color selection, and access to natural daylight. Purposeful implementation of architectural strategies in response to these trends will enable institutions to stay competitive and create dynamic facilities that adapt with future generations.
