The Government of Canada is investing in federal science to strengthen the safety of air, rail, marine and pipeline transportation systems that Canadians rely on every day. Located in Ottawa, the Transportation Safety and Technology Science (TSTS) hub will transform how federal researchers and private investigators work together by bringing them under one roof. Architecture49 and B+H Architects designed the 226,000-sf facility, which will serve as a shared space for the National Research Council and the Transportation Safety Board.
Engineers and scientists will engage with industry partners to create leading-edge safety technologies and risk mitigation solutions. Environments for in-depth investigation will be complemented by labs for the design and testing of next-generation aerospace materials. Ample exterior and interior glazing will admit natural light and promote connectivity in the structure, which will include a vibrant atrium and both mid-bay and high-bay settings. Bird Construction will deliver the project for a contract value of approximately CAD 410 million. Site work is slated to commence in fall of 2025 and completion is anticipated in 2030.
Part of the CAD 3.7 billion Laboratories Canada investment, TSTS is one of five national science hubs supporting research aligned with the country's safety, environmental, and economic priorities. The Laboratories Canada Repeatable Laboratory Design Framework (RLDF) will provide the roadmap for the building to meet programmatic requirements as efficiently as possible. The RLDF ensures that facilities are accessible, sustainable, and flexible to keep pace with future needs and technologies. Incorporating intelligent and adaptive infrastructure, the high-performance development will further Canada’s net-zero carbon commitment, as well as targeting both LEED Gold and Fitwel certification.
