University of Oklahoma Constructs Stephenson Life Sciences Research Center
The University of Oklahoma is constructing the $75 million Stephenson Life Sciences Research Center in Norman. Slated for completion in summer of 2010, the 160,000-sf building is located on the south campus and will provide research labs, graduate study facilities, and support for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Upstate Medical University Expands Institute for Human Performance
Upstate Medical University will begin construction in mid-2010 on a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance in Syracuse, N.Y. Doubling existing research space, the 100,000-sf addition will house biomedical research labs, offices, and a vivarium. The facility will support interdisciplinary research on nervous system disorders such as addiction, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Completion is expected in 2013.
University of Manitoba Breaks Ground Agricultural Education Facility
The University of Manitoba broke ground in December of 2009 on the $4 million Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre in Ritchot. Located at the university's Glenlea Research Station near the Fort Garry campus, the 8,280-sf education and demonstration center is slated for completion in October of 2010.
Western Digital Expands in Fremont
Western Digital Corp. is engaged in a 60,000-sf expansion of its facilities in Fremont, Calif. Housing a cleanroom, R&D laboratories, and a mechanical plant, the project will add a second story to the existing structure. Marelich Mechanical, a subsidiary of Emcor Group, will utilize BIM (Building Information Modeling) to plan and install the building systems for the project.
St. Vincent Health System Builds St. Clair Hospital
St. Vincent Health System has selected a partnership of Hoar Construction and Goodgame Co. to build the $31.4 million St. Clair Hospital in Pell City, Ala. The 76,000-sf replacement facility will include surgical suites, an emergency department, 40 inpatient beds, and outpatient services. Construction of the two-story hospital will begin in summer of 2010 and reach completion in late summer of 2011. A 45,000-sf medical office building will also be built at the site.
