Medical Research Council Plans Cambridge Biomedical Campus
The Medical Research Council is planning to construct the 2.4 million-sf Cambridge Biomedical Campus in Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The project will be developed by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Countryside Properties, and Liberty Property Trust. Housing facilities for biomedical research, clinical treatment, and instruction, the £900 million project will be located adjacent to the 270,000-sf Laboratory of Molecular Biology currently under construction at the site.
Community Health Systems Builds Porter County Hospital
Community Health Systems will break ground in spring of 2010 on a $210 million hospital in Valparaiso, Ind. The six-story, 430,000-sf project will provide 261 beds in private rooms and emergency, cardiology, surgery, and intensive care facilities. Completion is expected in summer of 2012.
Concordia University Plans Centre for Structural and Functional Genomics
Concordia University is planning to construct the Centre for Structural and Functional Genomics (CSFG) in Montreal, Quebec. Supported by $30 million in federal and provincial funding through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, the facility will be constructed as a 5,400-sm wing attached to the existing Richard J. Renaud Science Complex on the Loyola Campus. The Genomics Centre will house interdisciplinary laboratories for the study of genomics, systems biology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics.
Haffkine Institute Builds BSL-3 Lab
The Haffkine Institute is installing a pre-fabricated BSL-3 laboratory in Parel, Mumbai. Created by M+W Zander, the facility will support infectious disease testing for HINI, avian influenza, and other zoonotic agents. The laboratory will include biosafety cabinets, advanced air filtration, and a dedicated effluent decontamination system.
University of Florida Opens Shands Cancer Hospital
The University of Florida will open the $388 million Shands Cancer Hospital on Nov. 1, 2009. Located in Gainesville, the 500,000-sf facility provides 192 beds in private rooms, surgical suites, a Critical Care Center for trauma and emergency services, advanced diagnostic imaging, and a rooftop helipad. The construction manager for the project was Skanska USA Building. The nine-story tower features 97,000-sf of glass windows designed to resist Category 3 hurricane winds.
