Truman Veterans Hospital Breaks Ground on Addition
Truman Veterans Hospital broke ground on a $25 million addition in Columbia, Mo., in August of 2009. The project includes 27,000-sf of new construction and 12,000-sf of renovation to existing facilities. The new building will feature a surgical suite with five operating rooms. An additional $2 million will support renovated and upgraded research space. The general contractor for the expansion and renovation project is River City Construction of Peoria, Ill.
NOAA Plans Newport Research Base
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration is planning to construct a new research base in Newport, Ore. The $35 million waterfront facility will house laboratories, offices, warehouses, a pier, and a boat dock. Occupancy is expected in July of 2011.
Fermilab Receives $60 Million in R&D Funding
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., was awarded $60 million in funding in August of 2009 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. $52.7 million will support research and development of advanced particle accelerator technologies and $7.5 million will support collaborative neutrino research with Brookhaven National Lab. The award is the second round of stimulus funding the lab has received, as $34.9 million was awarded to Fermilab in March of 2009.
Southern Illinois University Plans Expansion
Southern Illinois University is planning to build a $72 million science building on its Edwardsville campus. The Engineering Building will also benefit from a $9 million expansion. Other planned projects include a $40 million health science building housing the departments of nursing, biology, and pharmacy; a $6 million expansion of the Art and Design Building; and a $4.5 million multidisciplinary laboratory at the Alton dental school.
Jackson Laboratory Builds Mouse Facility
The Jackson Laboratory broke ground on a $9 million mouse isolation facility in Bar Harbor, Maine, in August of 2009. The three-story project will provide 22,500-sf of laboratory space for the company’s reproductive services division. The facility will include suites for cryopreservation storage and mouse distribution The general contractor for the project is Consigli Construction of Portland, Maine. Completion is expected in November of 2010 with operations commencing in spring of 2011.
