Sutter Healthcare Breaks Ground on Eden Medical Center
Sutter Healthcare officially broke ground on the $320 million Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Calif., in July of 2009. Housing 130 private inpatient beds, the 230,000-sf, seven-story hospital will include emergency, trauma, neuroscience, and maternity facilities. A 34-bed universal care unit will provide acute care, lab services, pre- and post-surgery care, radiation therapy, and cardiology services. An adjacent 80,000-sf, four-story medical office building will also be constructed at the site.
Pfizer Develops Ringaskiddy R&D Laboratory
Pfizer will invest €11 million to construct the Kilo Technology Laboratory in Ringaskiddy, Ireland. The dedicated R&D laboratory will be located in the existing Process Development Centre on Pfizer’s County Cork campus. Housing 100 employees, the facility will support the creation of new manufacturing technologies.
Oakland University Plans Human Health Building
Oakland University is planning to build the $62 million Human Health Building in Rochester, Mich. Housing the departments of nursing and health sciences, the five-story, 160,000-sf facility is slated for completion in 2012. The Human Health Building will include classrooms, seminar rooms, an interactive media center, physical therapy clinics, simulation labs, clinical labs, computer labs, and distance learning facilities. The project architect is SmithGroup of Detroit.
DOE Breaks Ground on National Synchrotron Light Source II
The Department of Energy began construction on the $912 million National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) in July of 2009. Located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., the NSLS-II will support multidisciplinary research in advanced materials, nanotechnology, condensed matter, materials physics, chemistry, and biology. The project received $150 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will replace the existing National Synchrotron Light Source which began operations in 1982.
Princeton University Constructs Chemistry Building
Princeton University is building a 236,000-sf, four-story chemistry building in Princeton, N.J. Replacing existing chemistry facilities, the building will house teaching and research labs, department offices, lecture halls, and an auditorium. The sustainably-designed facility will feature self-closing fume hoods, photovoltaic panels, and advanced HVAC systems. The project team includes Hopkins Architects, Payette, and Turner Construction.
