United Regional Health Care Opens Bridwell Tower

United Regional Health Care opened the $70 million Bridwell Tower in Wichita Falls, Texas, in August of 2009. The five-story, 179,000-sf facility features a hybrid endovascular suite and includes facilities for general surgery, labor and delivery, diagnostic imaging, and pediatric care. The tower is linked to the main hospital campus by a sky bridge. Construction began on the tower in August 2007.

University of Arkansas Expands Fort Smith Facilities

The University of Arkansas is engaged in multiple construction projects on its Fort Smith campus. An expansion and renovation of the Boreham Library, designed by MAHG Architects, is in the preliminary stages and a $400,000 renovation of the Math-Science building is ongoing. Construction began in July of 2009 on a 130,000-sf student housing complex. The four-story, two-building project will include a dining hall and is slated for completion by fall of 2010.

Monsanto Constructs Winnipeg Breeding Center

Monsanto began construction in August of 2009 on a $12 million breeding center adjacent to its existing Canadian headquarters in Winnipeg. Located in the SmartPark Research and Technology Park on the University of Manitoba campus, the 29,000-sf facility will house laboratories, offices, greenhouses, growth chambers, and tissue culture facilities for the development of canola hybrids. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Occupancy is expected by December of 2010.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Awards Flu Vaccine Development Contract

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $35 million contract in June of 2009 to Protein Sciences Corporation of Meriden, Conn., to pursue advanced development of recombinant influenza vaccine. The technology involves injecting flu virus genes into an insect virus (baculovirus) where it multiplies quickly in the insect cells, which are purified to become a part of a human vaccine.

Oxford Brookes University Builds £90M Student Center

Oxford Brookes University will break ground in May of 2010 on a £90 million student center in Oxford, U.K. The 23,000-sm facility will be built to attain a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of Excellent for sustainable design and construction. The facility will house teaching space, a library, a student union, a medical suite, and a food court. Completion is expected by summer of 2012.
