Lakeview Medical Center Breaks Ground on Replacement Hospital

Lakeview Medical Center broke ground on a $42 million replacement hospital in Rice Lake, Wis., in May of 2009. The 130,000-sf facility will feature an energy-efficient design and is slated for occupancy in December of 2010. The hospital will be built for ease of future expansion, including the addition of a third floor.

Auckland University Expands Medical School

Auckland University is planning a $240 million expansion and renovation of its medical and health science campus in Grafton, New Zealand. Construction will begin in late 2009 on a new four-story building housing lecture halls and a large atrium. Occupancy is expected by year-end 2011. A renovation of three existing facilities is expected to reach completion by early 2013.

Indonesia Plans Flu Vaccine Labs

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health announced plans in May of 2009 to build a flu vaccine research and production facility. The laboratory will eventually manufacture a single human vaccine for swine and avian flu viruses. A flu vaccine laboratory is currently under construction at Airlangga University in Surabaya, East Java. Construction began on a flu vaccine facility at the PT Biofarma campus in Bandung in May of 2009.

Stimulus Funding Supports NIST Construction and Research

The National Institute of Standards and Technology received $610 million in federal stimulus funding for research and construction in May of 2009. $360 million will support construction projects at NIST research facilities. The 120,000-sf precision measurement laboratory under construction in Boulder will receive $68.5 million. The facility is expected to reach completion in 2012. The $2 million Net-Zero-Energy Residential Test Facility and a $7 million Fire and Police Services facility will be built in Gaithersburg, Md.

Mesalands Community College Builds Wind Research and Training Center

Mesalands Community College will begin construction in November of 2009 on the $7 million North American Wind Research and Training Center in Tucumari, N.M. The 26,385-sf facility was designed by Kilmer and Associates of Clovis and is slated for completion in December of 2010. The project will be comprised of a 12,697-sf wind turbine workshop and a 13,688-sf facility housing classrooms, labs, offices, and a lecture hall.
