Jefferson National Lab Plans Electron Beam Upgrade
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will begin construction in spring of 2009 on a $310 million upgrade of its Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) in Newport News, Va. The nuclear physics research project will include construction of a fourth experimental hall and a 250-foot extension of the lab's underground accelerator tunnel. Completion is expected in 2015.
Fraunhofer Builds Bird Flu Vaccine Plant
Fraunhofer USA has selected Nason Construction as the construction manager for a bird flu vaccine plant in Wilmington, Del. Located in Delaware Technology Park, the 14,000-sf GMP facility will support research and manufacturing of plant-based avian influenza vaccine. The project is supported by funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Completion is expected in fall of 2009.
AUO's TFT-LCD Facility Attains LEED Gold
AU Optronics Corp. announced in March of 2009 that its TFT-LCD manufacturing facility located in Central Taiwan Science Park has attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification. The AUO G8.5 Fab is the world's first LEED Gold TFT-LCD facility and one of only four LEED Gold fabs worldwide. The project features a 90 percent water recovery rate, saving 3 million tons of fresh tap water annually, with 90 percent of construction waste being reclaimed.
HHMI Partners with University of KwaZulu-Natal on HIV-TB Research
Howard Hughes Medical Institute is partnering with the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, to construct a $20 million HIV and tuberculosis research facility. Integrated with the Doris Duke Medical Research Institute at Nelson Mandela Medical School, the six-story facility will include two floors of high level biocontainment laboratories.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital Constructs Patient Tower
Sarasota Memorial Hospital will begin construction in October of 2009 on a $186 million renovation and expansion of its healthcare campus in Sarasota, Fla. Slated for completion by 2013, the project includes a new nine-story patient tower as well as expanded labor and delivery facilities. More than doubling the number of private patient rooms, the renovation will also include additional space for neonatal care, cardiology, surgery, and orthopedics. The general contractor for the project is Skanska USA.
