NBACC Nears Completion
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will dedicate the National Biodefense Analysis & Countermeasures Center (NBACC) on October 22, 2008. Part of the National Interagency Biodefense Campus at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Md., NBACC will support biological threat characterization and bioforensic research. The 160,000-sf lab will employ approximately 120 people and will include a vivarium and BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories.
NIH Allocates $70 Million Annually for Therapeutic Research
The National Institutes of Health will provide $70 million annually over four years to a network of nine centers engaged in chemical probes research. The initiative is designed to support the use of small molecule probes, an important tool for the exploration of cell processes, leading to the development of new therapies. The Molecular Libraries Probe Production Centers Network is the second phase of a program begun in 2004 as part of the Molecular Libraries and Imaging Initiative under NIH's Roadmap for Medical Research.
Maricopa County Expands Justice Complex
Maricopa County is constructing a 675,000-sf tower addition to its criminal justice complex in Phoenix, Arizona. Designed by Gould Evans with building systems engineered by Syska Hennessy Group, the 17-story building is slated for completion in 2011. Providing 32 additional courtrooms, secure judicial chambers, office areas and support spaces, the flexible building will feature floor-by-floor air handing units for improved system performance and indoor air quality.
Indiana University Expands Jacobs School of Music
Indiana University has selected Flad Architects and Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects to design the $44 million North Studio Building for the Jacobs of Music in Bloomington. The facility will house faculty teaching studios, classrooms, practice rooms, offices, and rehearsal rooms. Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects will act as architect-of-record for the project and will share design leadership with Flad Architects.
University of South Dakota Dedicates Health Science Building
The University of South Dakota dedicated the Andrew E. Lee Memorial Medicine and Science Building in Vermillion in September of 2008. Part of the Sanford School of Medicine and the School of Health Sciences, the facility houses technology-rich faculty research laboratories, classrooms, and offices.
