Walter Reed Replacement Facility Breaks Ground in Bethesda

Walter Reed National Medical Center broke ground in July of 2008 on a $970 million replacement facility at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.  Merging Army, Navy, and Air Force medical care, the 6.7 million-sf facility is slated for completion by 2011. Constructed adjacent to the Bethesda Naval Hospital, the treatment, research, and teaching facility will include a four-story inpatient building and a six-story outpatient building.

UT Knoxville Develops Cherokee Farm Research Campus

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is partnering with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to create the Cherokee Farm research campus in Knoxville. The project will include preservation of prehistoric remains and the relocation of an existing dairy farm to create a LEED-certified R&D incubator for commercialization of scientific discoveries. Research areas will include leadership and network computing; neutron science; nanotechnology and materials science; energy, climate, and environmental science; and biomedical science.

Siemens Builds Elgin Plant

Siemens Energy & Automation will construct a second manufacturing plant in Elgin, Ill., to support its drives technologies product line. The $20 million production, assembly, and testing facility will support an additional 350 employees and is slated for completion in March of 2009.

Ark Therapeutics Opens GMP Manufacturing Facility

Ark Therapeutics Group opened a $19.1 million GMP-3 manufacturing facility in Kuopio, Finland, in July of 2008. The commercial scale production plant is connected to Ark's existing laboratory suites and will manufacture gene-based medicines. The BSL-2 facility features a 547-sm cleanroom with HEPA air filtration. The duration of construction for the project was three years.

Medical Research Council Constructs Laboratory of Molecular Biology

The Medical Research Council has selected HBG to build the £197 million Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in the United Kingdom. Designed by RMJM, the 32,500-sm laboratory will be supported by over 780 structural piles to mitigate vibration and will include an underground heat recovery pipe system. A 4,600-sm energy center will also be built. Construction will begin by year-end 2008 with completion expected in early 2012. The construction cost for the laboratory is £140 million.
