University of Minnesota Plans Plant Pathogen Lab
The University of Minnesota will construct a plant pathogen laboratory with greenhouses on its St. Paul campus. The project was approved by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in June of 2008 and will accommodate research on diseases such as the virulent stem rust Ug99. The secure facility will feature advanced air filtration and containment technologies.
Group Health Opens Bellevue Medical Center
Group Health opened the 190,000-sf Bellevue Medical Center on July 1, 2008. Located in Bellevue, Wash., the four-story outpatient facility was designed by Ellerbe Becket of Minneapolis and includes 136 patient care rooms and seven operating rooms with ceiling booms for equipment. Bellevue Medical Center will partner with the adjacent Overlake Hospital where inpatient care will be provided to patients who require an overnight stay.
UCLA Opens Ronald Reagan Medical Center
Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center opened its 1,050,000-sf replacement hospital in Los Angeles on June 29, 2008. Constructed to rigorous seismic standards, the 10-story academic medical center was designed by Pei Partnership Architects with Perkins+Will as executive architect. Consultants include RBB Architects, Zakian Woo Architects, and Pickett Designs.
Miami Valley Hospital Builds Dayton Heart Tower
Miami Valley Hospital has selected a joint venture of Skanska USA Building and Shook Construction as construction manager for the 484,000-sf Heart Tower in Dayton, Ohio. Ground was broken on the $135 million facility in May of 2008 with completion slated for late 2010. Designed by NBBJ, the tower will include a comprehensive heart center, 180 private patient rooms, cardiac surgery suites, and a cardiac intervention center.
Monroe Clinic Plans Expansion and Renovation
Monroe Clinic will break ground in fall of 2008 on an $85 million addition to its hospital campus in Monroe, Wis. Designed by Kahler Slater of Madison, the $55 million facility will house inpatient and outpatient care, an emergency department, and a helipad. The project contractor is CG Schmidt. The building, which will connect the existing hospital and clinic facilities, is designed to provide a flexible and operationally efficient facility with enhanced access to medical services.
