United Nations Initiates Headquarters Renovation
The United Nations has selected Skanska USA Building to serve as the construction manager for the UN’s Capital Master Plan (CMP) renovation and upgrading of the international agency’s headquarters in New York City. Skanska expects to perform the project on a phased basis through 2014, with a total anticipated value of the work being approximately $1 billion. Skanska will negotiate, and submit to the UN for approval, separate Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) contracts for each phase of the project.
SouthWest NanoTechnologies Breaks Ground on Nanotube Facility
SouthWest NanoTechnologies broke ground on a 15,000-sf single-wall carbon nanotube manufacturing facility in Norman, Okla., in July of 2007. The $3.9 million project will include a vibration-free testing laboratory and space for 27-ft tall reactors. Occupancy is slated for the second quarter of 2008. The project team includes architect Mark Krittenbrink with Armstrong Construction as general contractor.
Emory University Selects Dr. Fred Sanfilippo as Executive VP
Emory University has selected Dr. Fred Sanfilippo as executive vice president for health affairs at Emory, chief executive of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and chairman of the board for Emory Healthcare. He will assume his new post on Oct. 1, 2007. Dr. Sanfilippo previously served as senior vice president and executive dean for health sciences at Ohio State University and the CEO of OSU Medical Center since 2000.
Marshall University Breaks Ground on Engineering Facilities
Marshall University will break ground in August 2007 on a $3.5 million, 16,000-sf undergraduate engineering laboratory building in Huntington, Iowa. Completion is expected by fall of 2008. The facility will house environmental and interdisciplinary labs, three offices, a classroom, and material storage. Marshall is also planning to construct a $50 million classroom, office, and laboratory facility between the existing $48 million Byrd Biotechnology Science Center and the engineering lab building.
Scott & White Opens University Medical Campus in Round Rock
Scott & White opened the University Medical Campus in Round Rock, Texas in July of 2007. The $81 million facility houses emergency, cardiac care, diagnostic imaging and testing, gynecology, pediatrics, and orthopedics. Sited on 68 acres, the facility is primarily paperless with medical records viewable electronically from any other Scott & White hospital or clinic.
