U.S. Army Develops Aberdeen Lab and Office Complex
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded the $477.5 million contract for an office and laboratory design-build project in Aberdeen, Md., to Turner Construction Company and its subsidiary, Tompkins Builders, in a joint venture with Grunley Construction and Kinsley Construction. This award is part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program and one of the first BRAC projects of this magnitude and scope.
Muhlenberg College Partners with ARAMARK to Achieve LEED Silver
With ARAMARK as its commissioning agent, the new science building at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., has been awarded a Silver Rating from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. This is the first building on the college’s campus to be LEED certified. The 47,000-sf facility houses the life science laboratories, classrooms, and offices.
Florida International University Designs College of Nursing & Health Sciences
Florida International University has selected HOK to design the 103,000-sf College of Nursing & Health Sciences building in Miami. Housing all seven college departments, the facility will feature eight simulator rooms for nursing and health science instruction. The technology-rich building’s 15 laboratories, two 150-seat classrooms, and three auditoriums will foster interdisciplinary collaborative learning. Completion is slated for 2009.
Integrated Biology and Genomic Medicine Institute Plans Camden Facility
The State of New Jersey has selected architectural firm Ballinger of Philadelphia to design the planned $50 million Integrated Biology and Genomic Medicine Institute in Camden. The project construction manager for the stem-cell research center is Skanska of Parsippany. The facility will be owned by Rutgers University-Camden; research partners include the Coriell Institute, Cooper University Hospital; and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Camden.
Yale Designs School of Management
Yale University has selected London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners to design the new School of Management (SOM) campus. Sited on 4.25 acres in New Haven, Conn., the 230,000-square-foot facility more than doubles the size of the existing 110,000-sf school of management and is expected to attain LEED certification. The building will house classrooms, faculty offices, administration, and student and community spaces. Construction is expected to reach completion in 2011.
