Naval Training Center Foundation Renovates Point Loma for Cultural Center

The Naval Training Center Foundation will utilize a $300,000 grant from California's Office of Historic Preservation to renovate Building 5 of the Liberty Station base conversion project at the former Point Loma Naval Training Center. Building 5, a 12,658-sf, two-story facility, was constructed in 1923 and is one of 26 historical buildings slated for renovation on the site. The Liberty Station civic, arts and cultural development, housing office, studio, gallery, museum, educational, performance, retail, and restaurant space, is expected to open in 2005.

South Shore Hospital Completes Newton Expansion Project

The construction of SouthShoreHospital's maternity/surgery/emergency expansion project in Newton, Mass., is now completed. The expansion, involving 125,000-sf of new construction and 55,000-sf of renovations on four levels, was designed by TRO/The Ritchie Organization. The new surgical department, one of the region's most technically advanced, includes 14 operating rooms, 1 cystoscopy room, a 30-bed ambulatory surgical unit, and a 30-bed post-anesthesia care unit.

UCSD Builds Moores Cancer Center

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) began construction on the $100-million Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center located on the school's east campus in La Jolla. Slated for completion in 2004, the 270,000-sf facility will be one of 40 buildings in the nation designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Consolidating people and programs currently dispersed in various campus buildings, the center will house over 300 scientists, physicians and staff engaged in clinical, research, education, and outreach operations.

International Monetary Fund Begins Headquarters Construction

Construction has begun on the International Monetary Fund's new Washington headquarters.  The 650,000-sf facility, designed by New York-based Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and associate architect Weihe Design Group, includes a 450-seat meeting room, a restaurant, and three levels of underground parking.  Developer for the project is CarrAmerica Realty, and the general contractor is Clark Construction Group.

Montclair State University Plans New Academic Facility

Montclair State University has selected  The S/L/A/M Collaborative of Glastonbury, Conn., to design a new, 6-8 floor academic building. The 190,000-nsf (271,428 gsf) structure will house 52 classrooms of various sizes as well as The College of Education and Human Services; The Office of Information Technology; and a 31,000-sf Conference Center. Completion of the $54,285,600 project is anticipated in February 2005.
