Brooklyn Army Terminal Renovation Contract Awarded
The New York office of Turner Construction Company was awarded a $29 million contract to renovate seven floors of an existing building at the Brooklyn Army Terminal by the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Turner is the construction manager for the 434,000-sf project, and also provided precontruction services to the owner. The architect is LZA Associates of New York City. Construction is scheduled for completion in April 2003.
Massachusetts General Hospital Redesign In the Works
Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc., and Michael Fieldman Architects are developing an overall site Master Plan for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Boston Campus. The plan will provide a framework for further expansion and includes implementation of a new 640,000-sf ambulatory building and a 725-car underground garage over the next six years.
American Family Insurance Building Developed in Washington Park
Washington Park, a multi-phased 1,100,000-sf corporate office development on a 25-acre campus in Phoenix, is being designed by Phoenix-based DFD Architecture. SunAmerica Investments Inc. is the master developer for the project. The office buildings range from 5 to 10 stories in height. The American Family Insurance building is the first building slated for construction, which is scheduled to begin in August, 2001 and reach completion in fall of 2002.
Johns Hopkins Develops Applied Physics Laboratory
The Johns Hopkins University has selected architectural and engineering firm RTKL to design Building 17—a $33-million, 230,000-sf building to house offices and special lab space at the Applied Physics Laboratory campus. The multipurpose structure will contain offices, computer lab and support spaces, as well as amenities for the overall campus: a conference center, cafeteria, fitness center, retail store, and medical unit. Pedestrian bridges will connect the facility to adjacent buildings. Completion is slated for 2004.
Howard University Dedicates Health Sciences Library
Howard University dedicated its new $27-million Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library in mid-November 2001. Washington, D.C.-based Hillier designed the four-story, 80,000-sf library, which can seat up to 615 people. The facility can accommodate as many as 400,000 volumes, periodicals, and digitally formatted material. The library features a telemedicine room, where students can make diagnoses from their workstations.
