Department of Energy Announces Funding Opportunity for Sustainable Construction Technology
The U.S. Department of Energy's Building Technologies Office announced up to $33.5 million in funding in May of 2019 for early-stage research and development of advanced building construction techniques to reduce energy costs. The Advanced Building Construction with Energy-Efficient Technologies & Practices (ABC) initiative aims to develop deep energy retrofit and new construction technologies that holistically tackle a combination of envelope, heating, cooling, water heating, and ventilation issues.
Rosalind Franklin Institute Breaks Ground on Translational Research Hub
The Rosalind Franklin Institute broke ground in May of 2019 on a £40 million campus hub in Harwell in the United Kingdom. The four-story, 58,000-sf facility will provide the government-funded research center with labs, instrumentation suites, offices, and interaction spaces to support leading-edge translational medicine programs.
Midwestern State University Builds Health Sciences Center
Midwestern State University is building the $40 million Centennial Hall in Wichita Falls, Texas. Housing the Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services, the four-story, 87,000-sf building will feature an 80-person round classroom, a learning stair, a collaborative student lounge, and a full-height atrium. The center will provide simulation training suites, classrooms, and teaching labs for programs in nursing, dental hygiene, radiologic sciences, respiratory care, and social work.
University of Strathclyde Constructs Learning & Teaching Building
The University of Strathclyde is building the £60 million Learning & Teaching Building in Glasgow in the United Kingdom. Designed by BDP to support innovative pedagogies, the flexible academic hub will provide 150-person collaborative classrooms, a learning village for individual study, student-facing support services, and space for the University of Strathclyde Students’ Association. The 215,000-sf project will incorporate two existing buildings and is slated for occupancy in fall of 2020.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory Breaks Ground on Translational Research Capability Facility
Oak Ridge National Laboratory broke ground on the $95 million Translational Research Capability facility in May of 2019 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Located on a brownfield site on ORNL’s main campus, the three-story, 100,000-sf building will provide laboratory and office space to support research programs in computing, quantum information, and materials science.
