University of East Anglia Builds Norwich Research Park Enterprise Centre
The University of East Anglia will break ground in June of 2013 on the $12.2 million Norwich Research Park Enterprise Centre in the United Kingdom. Designed by Architype, the high-performance facility is expected to attain the highest BREEAM and Passivhaus energy ratings and will feature an advanced HVAC system, triple-glazed windows, and ultra-low embodied carbon.
Construction Begins on National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility
Ground was officially broken on the $1.2 billion National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility on May 28, 2013. Located on the Manhattan campus of Kansas State University, the 574,000-gsf facility will support research on infectious disease agents and will contain BSL-4, BSL-3, BSL-3Ag, and BSL-2 laboratories. The first phase of the project is an $80 million, 87,000-sf central utility plant that is being built by joint venture partners McCarthy Building Companies and Mortenson Construction.
University of British Columbia Partners with Cisco Systems on Energy Technologies
The University of British Columbia is partnering with Cisco Systems to develop advanced energy management technologies. The project includes the use of the UBC campus as a living laboratory to create new industry benchmarks for sustainable operations. Cisco will invest up to $1 million over five years to develop an integrated campus-wide energy management network and new automation technologies.
Georgia Gwinnett College Builds Allied Health & Sciences Building
Georgia Gwinnett College is building the $30 million Allied Health and Science Building in Lawrenceville. Ground was broken on the 91,150-sf facility in March of 2013 and completion is expected in June of 2014. Designed by Smith Carter and TVS Design, the three-story facility will provide classrooms, faculty offices, seven chemistry labs, six biology labs, three physics lab, and labs for psychology, exercise science, IT systems, and digital media.
National Health Service Creates 15 Academic Health Science Networks
The United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) has created 15 Academic Health Science Networks to promote translational research and the application of best practices in healthcare. The 15 AHSNs are: East Midlands; Eastern; Greater Manchester; North East and North Cumbria; North West Coast; Imperial College Health Partners; Oxford; South London; South West Peninsula; Kent, Surrey and Sussex; UCL Partners; Wessex; West Midlands; West of England; and Yorkshire and Humber.
