SUNY Upstate Medical University Expands Institute for Human Performance

SUNY Upstate Medical University broke ground on a $72 million expansion of the Institute for Human Performance in April of 2011. Located in Syracuse, N.Y., the 158,273-sf project will support research on behavioral disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and visual system disorders. The facility will be constructed adjacent to the existing Institute for Human Performance and is slated for completion in 2013.

Texas Biomedical Research Institute Expands in San Antonio

The Texas Biomedical Research Institute will begin construction in early 2012 on a 70,000-sf expansion of its San Antonio campus. Designed by Lake Flato Architects and FKP Architects, the project will provide additional labs and offices for the Southwest National Primate Research Center and programs in regenerative medicine, virology, and immunology. The MEP design consultant for the expansion is HMG & Associates of San Antonio. Completion is expected in mid-2013. LEED certification will be sought for the facility.

UC San Diego Expands Rady School of Management

The University of California, San Diego is building a 50,000-sf addition to the Rady School of Management. The five-story project comprises two buildings connecting to the existing facility. The expansion will house two auditoriums, instructional space, research labs, offices, and executive education classrooms. The project team includes architect Ellerbe Becket and construction manager Swinerton Builders. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Loma Linda University Medical Center Opens Murrieta Hospital

Loma Linda University Medical Center opened a $211 million hospital in Murrieta, Calif., in April of 2011. The 106-bed facility houses a heart center, an emergency room, obstetrics, pediatrics, and cardiac care. The hospital features six technology-rich surgical suites including a hybrid operating room with integrated imaging equipment. Construction began on the project in November of 2008.

ORNL's Chemical and Materials Sciences Building Nears Completion

Oak Ridge National Laboratory will open the $95 million Chemical and Materials Sciences Building in June of 2011 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The three-story, 160,000-sf facility will provide advanced research laboratories and equipment suites. The project team includes architect Cannon Design and construction manager McCarthy Building Companies. Original concept design was completed by Flad Architects of Madison, Wis. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
