Veterans Affairs Builds Pittsburgh Research Facility
Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Health System will begin construction in late spring of 2011 on a $27.3 million research office facility. The three-story, 100,000-sf project will provide laboratories, clinical space, offices, support, and a rooftop helipad. The project team includes Pittsburgh-based architectural firm Astorino and general contractor P.J. Dick of West Mifflin. Completion is expected in October of 2013.
University of North Carolina Health Care Breaks Ground on Hillsborough Hospital
University of North Carolina Health Care broke ground on a satellite hospital campus in Hillsborough in April of 2011. The $200 million project will be constructed by Skanska USA Building in two phases. The first phase, a three-story, 60,000-sf physician office building, is slated for occupancy in spring of 2013. The second phase, a 260,000-sf, 68-bed hospital, will open in July of 2015. The hospital will include an emergency department, an intensive care unit, six operating rooms, and two procedure rooms.
Spring Valley Laboratories Opens Animal Research Surgical Suite
Spring Valley Laboratories opened its advanced surgical center for animal research in April of 2011 in Woodbine, Md. Located in a GLP-compliant facility, the surgical suite includes a dual station operating room, designated animal prep and recovery areas, a dark room, and a four-station necropsy suite. Spring Valley Laboratories is a contract research organization. The Woodbine facility provides indoor specific pathogen free (SPF) barrier animal housing for small and large animal models.
Valent BioSciences Plans Bioprocessing Facility
Valent BioSciences is planning to build a $132 million bioprocessing facility in Osage, Iowa. The 130,000-sf building will house fermentation tanks with downstream processing equipment, quality assurance labs, offices, and warehouse space. Valent BioSciences is a maker of biological pesticides and plant growth regulators based in Libertyville, Ill.
North Carolina State University Dedicates Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center
North Carolina State University will dedicate the $72 million Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center in Raleigh in May of 2011. Doubling the size of the Small Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the 110,000-sf addition will house exam rooms, surgery suites, teaching space, and a pharmacy. The facility will support veterinary training and animal care with advanced imaging technologies, a linear accelerator, and copper-shielded rooms for neurological and opthalmological diagnostics.
