Danbury Hospital Initiates Tower Expansion
Danbury Hospital will begin construction in January of 2012 on a $150 million tower in Danbury, Conn. The 310,000-sf facility will provide an expanded emergency department, a 30-bed critical care unit, 35 private rooms for surgical patients, a helipad, and a lobby. The project architect is the S/L/A/M Collaborative. Completion is expected in 2014.
New York Medical College Constructs Biotechnology Center for Disaster Medicine and Emerging Infections
New York Medical College is constructing a biotechnology and medical training center in Valhalla, New York. The first phase of construction will cost $12.55 million and includes renovation of an existing 120,000-sf facility to house a clinical skills training laboratory. The building will also include the Hudson Valley Biotechnology Center for Disaster Medicine and Emerging Infections, a facility with simulation mannequins and live actors for disaster response training. Completion is expected in December of 2012.
University of New Mexico Dedicates Science & Math Learning Center
The University of New Mexico dedicated the Science & Mathematics Learning Center in March of 2011 in Albuquerque, N.M. The $14 million, 62,000-sf facility was built by McCarthy Building Companies and houses technology-rich classrooms and teaching labs for biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Designed by Van H. Gilbert Architect PC of Albuquerque in association with Shepley Bulfinch, the center includes distance learning facilities, a visualization lab, and a 200-seat auditorium.
Organogenesis Constructs Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant
Organogenesis broke ground on a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in April of 2011 in Canton, Mass. The 78,000-sf plant will use robotic and modular technologies to produce living cells used in regenerative medicine therapies. The project team includes architectural firm SMMA/Symmes Maini & McKee Associates and CRB Engineers. Completion is expected in 2013.
UC San Diego Constructs Biomedical Research Facility
The University of California, San Diego initiated construction in April of 2011 on the Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility in La Jolla, Calif. The 196,000-sf, five-story building is located on a 3.3-acre site on the School of Medicine campus. The $105 million project was designed by ZGF Architects and is being built by McCarthy.
