University of Adelaide Designs Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing
The University of Adelaide is planning to build a $97 million facility to house the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing. Designed by Hames Sharley of Adelaide, the six-story building will provide research labs, instructional space, and a 400-seat lecture hall.
John Muir Medical Center Opens Patient Care Tower
John Muir Medical Center opened the $612 million Thomas J. and Muriel T. Long Patient Care Tower on April 10, 2011. Located in Walnut Creek, Calif., the five-story, 380,000-sf facility was designed by Ratcliff of Emeryville, Calif., with ARUP as structural engineer. The 242-bed facility was constructed to meet rigorous seismic requirements and features six rooftop healing gardens, private patient rooms, a 24-bed ICU, three surgical suites, a helipad, and a 35-bed neonatal ICU.
University of Queensland Builds Advanced Engineering Building
The University of Queensland will build the $107 million Advanced Engineering Building in Brisbane. Located on the St. Lucia campus, the seven-story, 236,808-sf facility will be built to attain a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. The building will house instructional space, testing labs, design studios, administrative offices, and an auditorium. The general contractor for the project is Watpac Construction.
Scott & White Breaks Ground on Acute Care Hospital
Scott & White Healthcare broke ground on a 320,000-sf acute care hospital in April of 2011 in College Station, Texas. The five-story, 143-bed facility will provide comprehensive cancer services, an emergency department, cardiac catheterization labs, a neonatal ICU, operating suites, imaging, and maternity care. The project was designed by Jacobs Architects and Engineers and will be built by Kitchell Contractors. Completion is expected in summer of 2013.
University of Leicester Breaks Ground on Cardiovascular Research Centre
The University of Leicester will break ground in spring of 2011 on the $20.5 million Cardiovascular Research Centre (CRC). The four-story, 23,680-sf facility will be built as an addition to the clinical sciences wing of Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, U.K. The project team includes architectural firm ADP of Birmingham and general contractor Morgan Sindall. The CRC will house research laboratories, academic space, and a sample bank. Completion is expected in February of 2012.
