University of Wyoming Builds Visual Arts Center

The University of Wyoming broke ground on the 79,000-sf Visual Arts Center in Laramie, Wyo., in September of 2010. Housing teaching studios, administrative offices, a gallery, and a lecture hall, the $33 million facility will be built to achieve LEED sustainable design certification. The center will feature evaporative cooling, heat recovery, and an evacuated tube solar hot water system. Completion is expected in October of 2011.

Oregon Freeze Dry Breaks Ground on Manufacturing Facility

Oregon Freeze Dry broke ground on a manufacturing facility in Albany, Ore., in September of 2010. Supported by $21.3 million in federal stimulus funding, the $29 million project will support production of materials for ultracapacitors. Completion is expected in spring of 2012.

Enerkem Breaks Ground on Waste-to-Fuel Facility

Enerkem broke ground on a cellulosic ethanol waste-to-fuel facility on August 31, 2010. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, the $80 million facility is created in partnership with the City of Edmonton and the Government of Alberta. The plant will produce 10 MMgy of cellulosic ethanol, enough to fuel more than 400,000 vehicles annually with E5. The project will also include a research facility for the study of biomass, biofuels, and biochemicals. Completion is expected in 2011.

Hoag Opens Irvine Hospital

Hoag Hospital Irvine opened in late August of 2010 in Irvine, Calif. The 244,000-sf renovated facility houses surgical suites, a cardiovascular center, an emergency room, imaging, outpatient treatment, and inpatient rooms. The cost of the renovation was $84 million. The hospital features energy efficient systems for lighting, water, and sterilization.

CMC Biologics Completes Disposable Bioprocessing Facility

CMC Biologics has completed construction of a disposable biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Seattle. The project will support early-phase clinical production of mammalian cell culture-based recombinant proteins. The single-use facility represents a trend in bioprocessing to eliminate the costly sterilization procedures associated with traditional steel tank manufacturing, as well as decrease cross-contamination risks, by utilizing disposable processing equipment and bioreactors.
