Florida A&M University Breaks Ground on Pharmacy Phase II
Florida A&M University broke ground in September of 2010 on Phase II of the New Pharmacy Building in Tallahassee. The 65,000-sf facility will provide 45,000 nsf of teaching and research space. Housing more than 30 laboratories, the $30 million project is part of a pharmacy complex that will include new animal research facilities and advanced instrumentation suites.
Maryland Forensic Medical Center Opens in Baltimore
The $44 Million Maryland Forensic Medical Center opened in Baltimore in September of 2010. Located in the University of Maryland’s BioPark development, the advanced forensic science facility will house the state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Designed by Gaudreau, the 120,000-sf, six-story building includes a BSL-3 containment suite, autopsy labs, offices, and conference rooms. Construction began on the facility in summer of 2008.
Kaiser Permanente Opens Santa Rosa Expansion
Kaiser Permanente opened a $233 million expansion of its Santa Rosa hospital in October of 2010. The five-story tower houses an expanded emergency department and ICU as well as inpatient care. The project was designed by TLCD Architecture and built by Harbison-Mahony-Higgins Builders.
Yahoo Opens Energy Efficient Data Center
Yahoo opened the 155,000-sf Computing Coop data center in Lockport, N.Y., in September of 2010. Using 40 percent less energy than a conventional data center, the facility features long narrow hallways angled in the direction of local winds for natural cooling. The airflow eliminates the need to use circulated water for equipment cooling, resulting in a 95 percent reduction in water consumption. The project was supported by $9.9 million in funding from the Department of Energy.
Fayetteville State University Plans Science and Technology Building
Fayetteville State University will begin construction in January of 2011 on a $17 million science and technology building. The four-story, 64,000-sf facility will house classrooms, offices, and labs for chemistry, math, information technology, and science. The project contractors are Rentenbach Constructors and R.J. Leeper Construction. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility. Completion is expected in July of 2012.
