Nationwide Children's Hospital Breaks Ground on Research Building III
Nationwide Children’s Hospital broke ground on the $93 million Research Building III in May of 2010. Located in Columbus, Ohio, the 225,000-sf facility will house the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine, the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research, and the Center for Perinatal Research. Turner Construction is utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) to construct the facility. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Completion is expected in 2012.
York University Constructs Life Sciences Building
York University is building the $70 million Life Sciences Building in Toronto, Ontario. The four-story facility will house teaching and research labs, lecture halls, and classrooms for biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and kinesiology. The project team includes NXL Architects and SSG Architecture with Vanbots as construction manager. Completion is expected in spring of 2011.
Queen's University Builds Oshawa Hospital Training Facility
Queen’s University began construction in May of 2010 on the $6.6 million Lakeridge Health Education And Research Network in Oshawa, Ontario. Located at Lakeridge Health Oshawa Hospital, the facility will house two simulation labs, offices, conference rooms, and an auditorium. Occupancy is expected in March of 2011.
Mercy Medical Center Completes Merced Hospital
Mercy Medical Center celebrated the opening of its $166 million replacement hospital in Merced, Calif., on April 23, 2010. The project includes an eight-story, 266,000-sf acute care tower and a 19,000-sf central plant. Providing 185 beds, the hospital houses an intensive care unit, a surgery center, labor and delivery, a neonatal ICU, an emergency department, and ambulatory care. The hospital was designed by RBB Architects with McCarthy as construction manager and Harris & Associates as owner’s construction manager.
University of Iowa Dedicates State Hygienic Laboratory
The University of Iowa dedicated the State Hygienic Laboratory on May 5, 2010. The $38 million facility is located in the University of Iowa Research Park in Coralville. The building features an open lab plan to maximize researcher collaboration. The LEED-certified facility supports detection and response for environmental contaminants and infectious diseases.
