Highline College Opens Health and Life Sciences Building

Highline College opened the $30 million Health and Life Sciences Building in January of 2020 in Des Moines. Designed by McGranahan Architects, the 46,000-sf facility offers flexible learning environments including classrooms, labs, faculty offices, and study spaces. Supporting a pedagogy of team-based care, the project collocates all the college’s health professions programs in a single location to enhance collaborative learning.

Hobbs Brook Constructs Waltham Research Complex

Hobbs Brook Management is building a 500,000-sf research complex in Waltham, Mass. Designed by Gensler, the four-story development will offer sophisticated laboratories, Class A office space, dining amenities, and a fitness center. Gilbane Building Company is the construction manager for the project and JLL will acting as exclusive leasing agent.

University of Strathclyde Renovates Biomedical Engineering Building

The University of Strathclyde is renovating Wolfson Hall to house its department of biomedical engineering. Designed by McLean Architects and Wellwood Leslie Architects, the £15.5 million project will create new teaching and research labs, flexible instructional venues, engaging spaces for interaction and collaboration, and additional offices for faculty, staff, and graduate students.

Emory Healthcare Constructs Musculoskeletal Institute

Emory Healthcare is building the 180,000-sf Emory Musculoskeletal Institute in Brookhaven, Ga. Part of the $1 billion Executive Park development, the facility will provide comprehensive orthopaedic services including spine care, physical therapy, imaging, and ambulatory surgery. The building will also include support space for clinical and discovery research.

Stevens Institute of Technology Opens Gateway Academic Center

Stevens Institute of Technology opened the $68 million Gateway Academic Center in December of 2019 in Hoboken, N.J. Designed by WRT, the 89,500-sf teaching and research facility is comprised of two buildings connected by a glass skybridge. The four-story complex provides 10 technology-rich classrooms, 13 labs, 45 faculty offices, conference rooms, reception halls, areas for student organizations, and multipurpose flex spaces.

NASA Constructs Aerospace Communications Facility

NASA will begin construction in March of 2020 on the 54,000-sf Aerospace Communications Facility in Cleveland. Located at the Glenn Research Center, the structure will provide approximately 25 R&D labs, a shielded high-bay space, and areas for rooftop and ground-based antennae fields. The project has a maximum construction contract value of $33.8 million and will be built by The Austin Company. A minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility, which will include a geothermal system to enhance energy performance.

Virginia Tech Renovates and Expands Holden Hall

Virginia Tech is renovating and expanding Holden Hall in Blacksburg. The existing 42,100-gsf building houses engineering programs in mining, minerals, and materials science. The project includes a complete renovation of the central structure, as well as demolition of two single-story wings and construction of a three-story wing and a four-story wing.

University of Maryland Begins Construction on School of Public Policy

The University of Maryland began construction in late 2019 on the $45 million School of Public Policy in College Park. Designed by Leo A Daly in association with VJAA, the 70,000-sf facility will collocate the school's five research centers and institutes, as well as accommodating 90 faculty members and over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Featuring a biophilic design, the four-story building will offer five flexible learning environments providing between 25 and 150 seats.

Amgen Leases South San Francisco Research Facility

Amgen has leased a 240,000-sf research facility located on the Gateway of Pacific campus in South San Francisco, Calif. Amgen will occupy the entire north tower, which is being constructed by BioMed Realty as part of the second phase of development at the site. Featuring modular wet and molecular labs designed for optimal energy efficiency, the facility will accommodate Amgen's research programs in oncology, inflammation, and cardiometabolic diseases.

Golden West College opened the $57 million Math and Science Building in December of 2019 in Huntington Beach, Calif. Designed by HMC Architects to promote innovation and invention, the collaborative 120,516-sf facility houses a STEM center, 18 wet and dry science labs, lecture spaces, classrooms, group study areas, and faculty offices. Offering engaging environments for hands-on learning, the three-story structure provides multifunctional spaces that encourage investigating, exploring, making, and communicating.

Boston University Breaks Ground on Center for Computing & Data Sciences

Boston University broke ground on the $288 million Center for Computing & Data Sciences in December of 2019. Located on the Charles River Campus, the 19-story structure will comprise a four-story podium topped by 13 floors, with MEP systems located on additional basement and penthouse levels. Collocating the departments of statistics, mathematics, and computer science, the 350,000-sf building will include terraced platforms with whiteboard walls and a collaboration ramp to promote interaction and innovation.

Unilever Opens Hive Innovation Centre

Unilever opened the Foods Innovation Centre in December of 2019. Located on the campus of Wageningen University in the Netherlands, the $94 million Hive facility offers collaborative research and development facilities for the creation of sustainable food products. Designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects, the 439,706-sf innovation hub provides laboratories, an expansive atrium, a pilot plant, an innovation kitchen, an auditorium, a food bar, a retail market, and an underground parking garage.

AstraZeneca’s Approach to Open Office Lab Environments with Activity-Based Workplaces

The new 100,000-sf AstraZeneca site in South San Francisco, located in the Cove at Oyster Point complex, is the company’s first facility where open offices and labs are seamlessly integrated with each other to promote increased mobility and interaction among the researchers. Housing around 400 employees, the building brings together staff from AstraZeneca’s Technology Innovation & Delivery Excellence (TIDE) unit, as well as subsidiaries MedImmune, Acerta Pharma, and Pearl Therapeutics into one state-of-the-art facility at the center of the Bay Area’s vibrant biotech and technology sector.

Designed by HOK to promote synergy and innovation, the multidisciplinary building will offer 346,000 sf of dedicated research space for programs in biomedical engineering, imaging sciences, cardiovascular medicine, oncology, pediatric health, inflammation, emerging infections, and immunity and immunotherapeutics.

University of Southern Maine Plans Student Center and Residence Complex

The University of Southern Maine is planning to break ground in spring of 2020 on a $100 million student center and residence complex in Portland. Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, the project will be constructed with cross-laminated timber and will leverage Passive House ventilation strategies to optimize energy efficiency. The 60,000-sf student hub and career center will border one side of a new college green, adjacent to two interlocking dormitories providing 379 residential units offering approximately 575 beds.
