Georgia State University Plans Global Infectious Diseases Research Facility

Georgia State University is planning to construct an $84 million research building in Atlanta for the study of global infectious diseases. Designed by HOK, the 84,100-sf biocontainment facility will provide BSL-3 and BSL-4 labs, a vivarium, collaborative open research areas, offices, and support space. A design-bid-build contractor is being sought for the project, which has an estimated construction cost of $66 million. The structure represents the third phase of development at the university's Science Park and is slated for completion in 2022.

Oklahoma State University Constructs Animal and Agricultural Science Facilities

Oklahoma State University is planning to break ground in spring of 2021 on a $100 million facility for the College of Agriculture in Stillwater. Designed to promote hands-on, experiential learning, the building will offer flexible teaching and research labs, dynamic classrooms, collaboration spaces, and faculty offices. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2023. OSU is also building the $7.1 million Animal Nutrition and Physiology Center.

The new 84,000-gsf (41,000-nsf) building, an addition to the original facility, will provide space to accommodate the burgeoning demand for molecular diagnostics while bringing activities on both sides of the ADRDL mission—research and diagnostics—under one roof.

HALIX Opens Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility

HALIX opened a 72,000-sf biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing center in November of 2019 at Leiden Bio Science Park in the Netherlands. The five-story structure provides BSL-2 cleanrooms with unidirectional process flows that can easily be upgraded to BSL-3 as needed. A manufacturing line with a 250-liter bioreactor capacity supports the production of viral vaccines and viral vectors, while a separate protein manufacturing area accommodates single-use bioreactors with a capacity of up to 1,000 liters.

North Carolina State University broke ground on the $160 million Plant Sciences Building in Raleigh in September of 2019. Designed by Flad Architects, the five-story, 184,000-sf facility will allow academic, government, and industry researchers to develop innovative solutions for global agricultural challenges. Located on the Centennial Campus, the building will house growth chambers, environmental rooms, core instrumentation suites, and labs for genotyping, spectrometry, ag-bio engineering, and chemical and soils analysis.

South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Lab Completes Expansion Project

The South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) celebrated the opening of its expanded Brookings facility in September of 2019. The $58 million project included construction of an 81,000-sf addition offering 3,762 sf of biocontainment space which provides BSL-2E necropsy and BSL-3 facilities. A 4,000-sf chiller plant was also constructed. General contractor McCownGordon broke ground on the expansion in August of 2017. The lab's existing 55,000-sf facility will now undergo renovation and completion is expected in May of 2020.

Designed as a barrier facility with advanced HEPA filtration and positive air pressure systems, the $7.5 million farrow-to-finish complex will enable biomedical research on the creation of organs for xenotransplantation in humans. Supporting lean manufacturing operations, the biocontainment facility features advanced building systems including individual controls for the air pressure in each room and an energy recovery wheel for optimal heat exchange.

Colorado State University broke ground in July of 2019 on the $22 million Center for Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases in Fort Collins. Designed by Merrick & Company and BSA LifeStructures, the 41,000-sf research facility will house the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology. The project will provide offices, support space, and BSL-2 labs for the detection and study of arthropod-borne and infectious diseases.

Texas A&M University opened the $104 million Medical Research and Education Building II (MREB II) in June of 2019 in Bryan, Texas. Designed by Flad Architects and OMNIPLAN, the 155,077-sf project comprises a 48,200-sf vertical expansion to the existing Medical Research and Education Building (MREB I) and a 122,800-sf addition, enabling the College of Medicine's basic science departments to be collocated in a single campus.
