The microelectronics division of Lucent Technologies Inc. has leased 62,000 sf in North Austin. Occupying a majority of the available 76,000 sf in Building 6 at Braker Center IV, the facility will provide space for projected growth and additional personnel in the network processors microelectronics group. Based in Murray Hill, N.J., Lucent's Austin space will include large hardware and software labs, a fitness center, game room, and a cafeteria.
Cisco Systems Inc. plans to occupy two of three buildings under development at Emerald Point in Dublin. The two buildings, currently under construction, will provide general office and R&D space for Cisco. The first building is scheduled for occupancy in spring 2001, the second in spring 2002. Opus West is the developer. Cisco is expanding in a number of San Francisco bay area cities including Pleasanton, Fremont, Coyote Valley, Milpitas, Alviso, and Petaluma.
Multek Inc. plans to build a state-of-the-art printed circuit board plant in Austin. The company is seeking a 50-acre site for the manufacturing center that would employ as many as 1,800 people when it opens in mid- to late 2002. Multek is consulting with Endeavor Real Estate Group of Austin on the development of the project.
Mayville Metal Products, based in Creedmor, N.C., is seeking an Austin site to build a 80,000-sf integration center, including a 10,000-sf cleanroom, for the semiconductor industry. Mayville will integrate the 300mm (12-inch) wafer at the new site. The company will close its 30,000-sf logistics center in southeast Austin.
Intel Corp., based in Santa Clara, Calif., may consolidate employees from its three San Diego facilities at a 31-acre site at Scripps Ranch which the company purchased in December 2000. The site could accommodate approximately 1 million sf of office space, which would be sufficient for several thousand employees. Intel's San Diego operations, which employ about 480 people, include networking and communications products; a wireless R&D operation; and a logic chip sets facility.
Fujitsu Laboratories plans to work with its subsidiary, Fujitsu Laboratories America, in Sunnyvale, Calif., and the University of Maryland in College Park, to create a $3.5-million research institute devoted to advanced computer technology. Beginning in April 2001, the institute will study bioinformatics, network security, wireless computing, and the impact of pervasive computing. Fujitsu anticipates a $10-million budget and a staff of 40 by 2004.
Calibre Systems has selected Dietze Construction Group to complete the interior build-out of its new 80,000-sf office. The Smith Group designed the office for the defense contractor, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2001. The facility will be part of Metro Park in Alexandria, a 1 million-sf office park of five-, six-, and 10-story office buildings being developed by Fried Cos.
MassTech Center LLC is a proposing to build a 3.7-million sf technology office park in Eastern Massachusetts at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. If approved by the South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp., the Hingham, Mass.-based company would proceed with a staged development of the project over an eight to ten-year period.
Zygo TeraOptix Inc., based in Holliston, Mass., has a $9 million renovation and expansion under way in Westborough at a newly purchased 87,000-sf facility. A 33,500 sf expansion will create a new floor within one section of the structure that has 50-ft-high ceilings, bringing the total space available to 120,000 sf. Employees will begin occupying approximately 30,000 sf of the building in December 2000, while renovations to the electrical and HVAC systems are ongoing.
Public Square Tech Center--a one million-sf high tech redevelopment project under way in Cleveland at the site of the historic May Company Building--will become a cutting-edge mixed-use center that will include technology uses, office, retail, and parking. The building offers over 100 watts per sf of power, multiple fiber providers, heavy floor loads (up to 170 pounds per sf), and high ceilings. Potential tenants include web hosting firms, switch facilities, and data centers.
GiantLoop Network has hired Peabody Construction of Boston to renovate an 89,000 sf facility in Waltham, MA. Technological upgrades are included in the project cost of $2 million.
Nordic Technology Park, a 43,500-sm building formerly used as a Soviet military communications factory, is being converted to an office building for the Baltic high-tech industry. American architects Arrowstreet of Somerville, Mass., working with Latvian architects Valenius un Stepe, are completely renovating the structure.
Sun Microsystems intends to purchase 11.8 acres in Dublin, Calif., for development of a new campus. The proposal submitted to Alameda county includes a bid of $43 million for the county's remaining surplus land, providing up to 750,000 sf of office space for as many as 3,000 employees.
Union Station Telecom Center is under construction at the site of a former warehouse in northeast Washington. Construction began in summer 2000 to restore the six-story, 440,000-sf structure in preparation for tenant build-out.
Cohu Inc. plans to relocate its plant and headquarters from Kearny Mesa, Calif., to a 20-acre site in Poway in 2001. The new $21.3 million, 338,00-sf facility will consolidate the operations of Cohu's manufacturing subsidiary, Delta Design, under one roof, and also accommodate administrative offices, and approximately 900 employees. Cohu manufactures test equipment used in the manufacture of semiconductors.
