Sun Microsystems has selected Elaine Construction Co. as construction manager for a 70,000-sf renovation of Building No. 6 on the company's Burlington campus. Designed by ADD Inc. of Cambridge, the project includes renovations of a computer ranch and office areas and is slated for completion by August of 2002.

ACET Incubator Considers Former Naval Fleet Site

Advancing California's Emerging Technologies (ACET) may team up with Catellus Development to create ACET's new home on 3.3 acres of the 213-acre former U.S. Naval Air Station Fleet Industrial Center. Originally a bioscience incubator, ACET has expanded its focus to include technology and energy applications. Currently operating from 8,800 sf of smaller Alameda Naval Air station labs, the ACET is seeking a $64-million grant to cover land, design and building costs for the new facility.

Novellus Expands Oregon Operations

San Jose-based semiconductor equipment maker Novellus Systems is expanding its Tualatin, Oregon, operations with the opening of a 382,000-sf plant. Located on a 58-acre campus, the factory will manufacture products for chipmakers to produce advanced integrated circuits, including Novellus' copper metallization and damascene dielectric deposition tools.

Nortel Opens Santa Clara Campus

Brampton, Ontario-based Nortel Networks opened its new 14-acre office and lab campus in Santa Clara on May 29, 2002. Ground was broken on the two-story, 760,000-sf facility in September 2000 with buildings reaching completion in March and April 2002. Consolidating 15 separate Bay Area locations, the campus also includes a parking garage.

Computer Sciences Corp. Develops New Carrollton Facility

Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) will occupy a new build-to-suit facility in Prince George's County, financed for $25-million by commercial real estate investment firm John B. Levy & Co.  Located in New Carrollton across from the IRS headquarters, the Metroview/CSC building is currently under construction and will house CSC's 325,000-sf office. The facility is being developed by Berman Enterprises. CSC was recently awarded a long-term computer system modernization contract by the IRS.

Sun Microsystems Expands Newark Campus

Sun Microsystems Inc. has selected architect Bottom Duvivier and project manager Kaplan McLauglin Diaz to complete Phase III of its Newark campus expansion. Six two- and three-story office buildings will be constructed by DPR Construction of San Jose. The project began in September of 2000 and is slated for completion in June of 2002.

Zhone Technologies Builds Corporate Headquarters

Zhone Technologies has selected architects Fee Munson Ebert and Ibsen/Senty Architecture to design its corporate headquarters and R&D facility in Oakland, Calif.   SRM Associates of Oakland will act as general contractor and project manager for the $54.5-million, 180,000-sf facility. Construction began in January 2000 and is slated for completion in March 2002.

Advanced Micro Devices To Renovate Austin Fab 25

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will invest $350 million in the next two years to convert its Fab 25 processor chip plant in Austin into a flash memory plant. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip manufacturer hopes to equip the plant to last through the next two generations of chip technology. Flash memory enables devices to retain memory and information without active power supply to the device.

Advanced Micro Devices Seeks Austin Office Space

Chip manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices Inc., based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is seeking 90,000 sf of office space in Austin to house Alchemy Semiconductor, which AMD recently purchased. The facility will be home to Personal Connectivity Solutions, a newly formed AMD division focused on non-PC product devices. Alchemy’s lease on 20,000 sf in Austin expires at the end of April. Alchemy develops and markets microprocessors.

Center for Emerging Technologies Developed in St. Louis

The Center for Emerging Technologies (Building II), a new 50,000-sf incubator facility designed by architect Mackey Mitchell Associates, houses high-growth, advanced technology companies. The building, originally built in 1907 for the Dorris Motor Car Company, provides open loft office space with an industrial character and is thoroughly wired to meet demanding electronic needs. Called "accelerator" space, it provides areas for expansion for companies still in product development.

Huawei Technologies Builds Corporate Data and Command Center

The Huawei Technologies Corporate Data and Command Center, a 130,000-sf facility designed by RTKL’s Applied Technology Group in Baltimore, Md., is now under construction in Shenzhen, China.  Huawei is a leading supplier of telephone switching equipment in China. The ‘world class’ command center includes an executive briefing room overlooking a two-story, 50-seat command center station. The center supports an equipment load of 40w/sf in 20,000 sf of space, with expansion at the same load density up to 40,000 sf.

Siemens Moves Enterprise Network Division to Skyport Plaza

Siemens Inc. has moved its Enterprise Network Division into 325,000 sf at San Jose's Skyport Plaza. The first phase of the 38-acre mixed use Skyport Plaza development consists of three eight-story buildings, two four-level parking garages providing approximately 1,760 parking spaces, a basketball court and pedestrian walkways. The second phase, a mirror of Phase I's commercial office and parking design, will progress as economic conditions improve.

Tokyo Electron America Plans R&D Facility

Tokyo Electron America is in the early planning stages for a $50-million, 40,000-sf 300-millimeter process integration center. The R&D facility will focus on developing tools for 300-mm chip manufacturing. Construction is slated to begin within two years at a 32-acre site near the company’s current operations in Southeast Austin. The semiconductor equipment supplier is a subsidiary of Tokyo Electron Ltd. based in Japan.
