The four-story, 80,000-sf Research and Graduate Education Complex on the campus of Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility for researchers from the colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, and Graduate Studies. Three floors of laboratories and support spaces house more than 30 scientists and their teams, with space for 156 bench researchers. The building also contains office space for faculty, write-up areas for research staff and students, and small-group teaching and seminar rooms.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology completed construction in January of 2015 on China's first maximum containment biosafety laboratory. Located in the Hubei province, the facility will support research on Class 4 Pathogens (P4) including Ebola and smallpox. The lab was created in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Institut Merieux, a French biomedical firm. Construction began on the project in July of 2011.

The National University of Ireland Galway began construction in January of 2015 on the 88,000-sf Human Biology Building. Designed by Scott Talon Walker Architects, the five-story teaching and research facility will provide labs, lecture halls, and offices for the departments of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. The Human Biology Building will also include a vivarium, a microscopy suite, and anatomy and mortuary space. The construction cost of the project is $34 million and the general contractor is BAM Group Ireland.

The New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is building a new 6,500-sf facility in Durham. Located on the campus of the University of New Hampshire, the $2.5 million project will support the detection and diagnosis of infectious diseases. The facility represents a partnership between the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture and the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food.

Coventry University will begin construction in mid-2015 on a $50 million facility for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in the United Kingdom. The five-story multidisciplinary building will provide classrooms, simulation suites for medical training, science labs, and core research space. The 121,200-gsf (75,500-nsf) project will be built by BAM Construction. Completion is expected by fall of 2017.

Illumina is planning a 360,000-sf research campus in Foster City, Calif. Developed by BioMed Realty Trust, the build-to-suit project will include two highly flexible laboratory and office buildings as well as outdoor recreation areas. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the campus, which is slated for completion in 2017. Illumina, a provider of genomic sequencing and diagnostics solutions, will initially lease the facilities for 15 years.

The seven-story “3.1” research building on the University of Washington Medical School’s South Lake Union campus adds 160,000 nsf of research and research support space for more than 300 occupants to a seven-building master plan totaling 1.2 million gsf.

The three-story International Vaccine Centre (InterVac) at the University of Saskatchewan is one of the largest vaccine research centers in the world and the largest in North America. It is connected by a walkway to the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) laboratory building in a cluster of life sciences R&D facilities at the University. The facilities operate together as VIDO-InterVac, one of only a few BSL-3 facilities in the world that can accommodate disease and vaccine research involving animals as large as cows.

The University of Maryland is building a new facility for the Clark School of Engineering in College Park. Ground was broken in November of 2014 on the 184,000-sf A. James Clark Hall, a collaborative, multidisciplinary facility created to support the development of advanced biomedical technologies. Designed by Ballinger, the building will provide a new home for the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices.

The University of Utah will renovate the existing 71,000-sf George Thomas building to create the Gary & Ann Crocker Science Center in Salt Lake City. The existing structure will be seismically upgraded and reconfigured, and a 52,500-sf addition will be built to accommodate laboratories for the Cell and Genome Research Center. The completed four-story, 123,500-sf facility will also provide lecture halls, classrooms, a café, a business incubator, and a full-height atrium. The project team includes EDA Architects and Okland Construction.

The University of Cambridge has awarded Kier Group a $91 million contract to build a new biomedical laboratory in the United Kingdom. The project will provide up to 180,000 sf of research space and will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Site work will begin in mid-2015 with completion expected in summer of 2017.

The Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is designed to facilitate a bench-to-bedside approach, where the clinical materials to treat disease are manufactured and administered within the hospital using cells from the patient’s own body. The project has achieved international recognition for its unique potential for optimizing patient care and for its success treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cancer.

The seven-story Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility on the UCSD Health Sciences campus includes wet labs, open lab space, lab support, and administrative support space on five stories above ground; with a vivarium; core lab space; support; and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the basement. Seven stories of attached administrative office space, interaction spaces and conference rooms are linked by a cast-in-place concrete staircase that climbs seven stories up through the open lobby, and one story down.

AstraZeneca will break ground in early 2015 on its $500 million Global R&D Centre and Corporate Headquarters in Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Providing sophisticated pharmaceutical discovery and development facilities, the project will include space for biologics research, high throughput screening, medicinal chemistry, pre-clinical research, and clinical development. The 11-acre campus will accommodate approximately 2,000 employees.

The University of Edinburgh will break ground in February of 2015 on a $50 million expansion of its Easter Bush campus. Designed by Atkins Global, the project is part of the University's master plan to create the European Centre of Excellence in Animal Sciences and Food Security and comprises an innovation center, a campus hub, and a multistory atrium.
