U.S. Can Consolidates with Newnan Manufacturing Facility

United States Can Co. of Illinois is consolidating two Georgia facilities into a new 185,000-sf plastics manufacturing facility in the Shenandoah Industrial Park in Newnan, Ga. Developed by First Fulton Associates, the building will be a prototype for other U.S. Can facilities nationwide.

Pergo Expands in Garner

Laminate flooring manufacturer Pergo AB is planning to add 33,000-sf to its Garner manufacturing plant. Slated for completion in December 2001, the $27-million expansion includes relocation of Pergo's Durham distribution center to an adjacent 180,000-sf facility at the Garner site. Pergo, formerly Perstorp Flooring Inc., is based in Sweden with U.S. headquarters in Raleigh, N.C.  Pergo currently employs 108 workers at its Garner production facility which opened in 1996.

RF Micro Devices Plans Facility Upgrade

RF Micro Devices Inc., based in Greensboro, plans to upgrade its clean-room manufacturing space. The two-year, $58-million project will also provide new semiconductor manufacturing equipment for its partner, Agere Systems Inc., in Orlando, Fl., to produce high-performance chips for communications products. RF Micro will also build a facility in Beijing to test and finish chips for the Chinese market.

Pirelli Develops Manufacturing Facility in Rome, Ga.

Pirelli Tire North America is developing a tire manufacturing facility in Rome, Ga. Site work has begun on the $140 million, 400,000-sf building housing office, research and manufacturing facilities. The plant is scheduled to open in mid-2002 and will provide tires for both new vehicles and the replacement tire market. H&M Co. of Jackson, Tenn., holds the design-build contract.

PerkinElmer Expands in the Bay Area

Acterna Develops Germantown Headquarters

Acterna’s new 310,000-sf complex at Milestone Business Park in Germantown now has a second building under construction—a 130,000-sf structure designed by Hickok Warner Fox Architects to house office and manufacturing functions. Turner Construction is the builder. The first building is a 180,000-sf headquarters, which is also under construction. The 44-acre site provides space for 680,000 sf of office/industrial construction.

Pharmanetics Occupies Morrisville Office

Pharmanetics Inc. recently moved into its new Morrisville office, a facility designed to create an egalitarian workplace and enhance workflow. The coagulation equipment maker wanted an adaptable space lending itself to work teams, group projects, and open communication. Based on a study conducted by Storr Office Environment, seating arrangements are based on work process with all cubicles the same size and layout, and no private offices.

Alpla Caribe Builds McDonough Manufacturing Plant

Alpla Caribe Inc., an international container manufacturing firm, is building a plastic bottle blow molding plant in McDonough, Ga.  The 100,000-sf manufacturing facility will also house headquarters for the company's American operations. On 16 acres near Midland Industrial Park, the building being developed by Pattillo Construction Co. is slated for completion in October and will open later in the year.

Krispy Kreme Builds Effingham Facility

Krispy Kreme, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., is expanding with a new mix and distribution center in Effingham, Ill. The $30 million facility will total 187,000 sf, with 116,000 sf allocated for distribution space and 47,000 sf of blending and packing space. In addition to 180 stores spread throughout 22 states, Krispy Kreme is considering expansion overseas in Asia and Europe.

Hale Plans NY Manufacturing Plant

Hale Manufacturing Company is planning to build an 80,000-sf facility on eight-plus acres near its present plant and offices in central New York State's Herkimer County. Completion is expected by late fall 2001. The company is a specialist in the design and manufacture of primarily solid wood and fine-wood veneer bookcases, and related wood storage cabinetry. The new facility will allow Hale to consolidate three present disparate sites into a single, larger one-story building with integrated manufacturing, finishing and shipping operations.

Pergo Expands Garner Plant

Laminate flooring inventor Pergo Inc. is planning to expand its Garner plant with a 187,000-sf distribution center and 50,000-sf of manufacturing space. Groundbreaking is scheduled for April with occupancy scheduled for January 1, 2002. The company's 136,000-sf distribution center in Durham will be relocating its operations to Garner.

TestChip Expands Austin Operations

TestChip Technologies is expanding from 4,000 sf to  30,000 sf in Austin as part of the company's drive to increase its R&D work. A developer of chips that test the semiconductor manufacturing process, the Plano-based firm will be adding 100 employees to its Texas operations. TestChip primarily supplies wafer foundries.

Chevron Phillips Chemical Plans New HQ at The Woodlands

Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. plans to break ground in spring 2001 on a new 195,000-sf eight-story headquarters building and parking garage at The Woodlands. The eight-acre site will accommodate approximately 600 employees, most relocating from Chevron's Tower facility in Houston. Completion of the project is scheduled for fall of 2002.

Motorola Plans Consolidation in Suwanee

Motorola Inc. has plans to consolidate six of its Atlanta-area operations at a new corporate campus on 111 acres in Suwanee. Present plans include two six-story office structures and a 660,000-sf office warehouse. The campus is expected to accommodate as many as 3,500 employees when the consolidation is complete.
