Caltech Plans Quantum Science and Technology Center

Caltech is planning to construct the Quantum Science and Technology Center in Pasadena, Calif. Accommodating interdisciplinary research programs in quantum sensing, quantum information, and gravitational-wave detection, the six-story, 47,000-gsf facility will offer four floors of airy interaction spaces and offices atop two levels of underground laboratories. Extensive interior and exterior glazing will admit natural light into the highly transparent structure, promoting visual connectivity and interaction among investigators and between faculty and students.

Hans Rosling Center for Population Health

The Hans Rosling Center for Population Health at the University of Washington (UW) is designed to realize the vision of the university’s Population Health Initiative, a 25-year mission to address the most persistent and emerging global challenges affecting human health, environmental resilience, and social and economic equity. The nine-story Center provides space for collaborative group work, active learning, offices, and training for the UW Department of Global Health, the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation (IHME), the UW School of Public Health, and the offices of the Population Health Initiative. The project was made possible by a $210 million gift from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $15 million in earmarked funding from Washington State.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Completes Construction on Energy Sciences Center

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory completed construction in early 2022 on the $90 million Energy Sciences Center in Richland, Wash. Designed by Kirksey Architecture, the 138,000-gsf facility features 52 modular labs for fundamental research in chemistry, materials science, and computing. Accelerating the discovery of new energy, transportation, and manufacturing technologies, the state-of-the-art building includes an NMR spectroscopy suite and four imaging labs for advanced electron microscopy.

University of Michigan Plans Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building

The University of Michigan is planning to build the $145 million Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building on the North Campus in Ann Arbor. Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and convergence, the 163,000-gsf facility will house both the School of Information and the College of Engineering’s Computer Science and Engineering Division. The technology-rich structure will feature innovative learning environments and research labs for programs in artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and information privacy and security.

George Brown College Breaks Ground on Mass Timber Building

George Brown College broke ground in December of 2021 on a CAD$160 million mass timber building in Toronto. Designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Acton Ostry Architects, Limberlost Place will house the School of Architectural Studies, the School of Computer Technology, and the Brookfield Sustainability Institute. The 10-story, 204,000-sf facility will also accommodate research labs, flexible classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, meeting rooms, a childcare facility, and a three-story atrium.

Pennsylvania State University Opens Animal, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Building

Pennsylvania State University opened the $98.5 million Animal, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Building in December of 2021 in University Park. Designed by HOK, the 105,000-sf facility provides the College of Agricultural Sciences with a state-of-the-art vivarium, a general-purpose classroom capable of accommodating 100 students, a 48-seat seminar room, and faculty offices.

Moore Ruble Yudell has been selected as the architect and planner for the public-private development, which is being created in collaboration with REACH Redlands LLC, a joint venture of Republic MetropolitanCreative Housing Associates, and Arteco Partners.

Designed by ZGF Architects and ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, the 350,000-sf facility will house the departments of neurology and neurobiology, a gene therapy center, and programs in animal research, molecular medicine, and human genetics and evolutionary biology.

The four-story, 74,000-sf facility is a dynamic hub for experiential learning and discovery that collocates entrepreneurial activities previously dispersed across campus. Sited adjacent to a new light rail station and an outdoor amphitheater, the multidisciplinary structure includes four distinct spaces.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and BDP, the £1 billion R&D facility can accommodate over 2,200 investigators engaged in the creation of next-generation therapeutics and innovative precision medicines. Integrating advanced robotic and AI-driven technologies, the 580,000-sf project is strategically sited on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to promote collaboration and convergence with neighboring institutions and industry partners.

Autolus Therapeutics broke ground in November of 2021 on a £66 million cell manufacturing facility in Stevenage in the United Kingdom. Accommodating the production of chimeric antigen receptor T-cells for the treatment of cancer, the 80,730-sf project is being built by Merit using modular offsite construction methodology to significantly accelerate the construction timeline and reduce carbon emissions.
