Site work will begin in January of 2011 on Kennewick General Hospital's new facility in Kennewick, Washington. The four-story, 168,000-sf building will provide 74 beds and includes a daylight basement. The general contractor for the $112 million project is C.D. Smith Construction of Wisconsin.

Capital Health Opens Hopewell Hospital

Capital Health Medical Center - Hopewell opened in New Jersey in November of 2011. The $530 million hospital provides 237 beds, an emergency department, an intensive care unit, 10 technology-rich surgical suites, a maternity unit, a pediatric department, and medical offices. The 1 million-sf facility features large patient rooms with many amenities to create a resort environment conducive to patient wellbeing.

Manitoba Health Breaks Ground on Selkirk Regional Health Centre

Manitoba Health broke ground on the $100 million Selkirk Regional Health Centre in November of 2011. The 65-bed hospital will feature 80 percent private rooms and will provide an outpatient center, obstetrics, surgery, imaging, rehabilitation, and cancer treatment facilities. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will utilize ground-source heat pump technology and low-flow water fixtures. Occupancy is expected in 2014.

Sentara Leigh Hospital Renovates Norfolk Facility

Sentara Leigh Hospital will initiate a $126 million renovation of its hospital campus in Norfolk, Va., in December of 2011. The project includes construction of two five-story patient towers. Orebro University Hospital has awarded NCC Construction Sweden a $38 million contract to build a research and teaching facility. The three-story, 124,861-sf building will house laboratories, instructional spaces, offices, a library, and a restaurant. Completion is expected in September of 2013.

Swedish Opens Issaquah Hospital Campus

Swedish Health opened its 550,000-sf medical campus in Issaquah, Wash., in November of 2011. The project includes a five-story medical office building, a cancer center, a birthing center, an emergency department, an imaging center, and a laboratory. The facility will initially open with 80 beds with the ability to expand to 175 beds in the future. The sustainably designed hospital features green roofs, oversized ductwork, high-efficiency boilers, and a heat recovery chiller.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Plans Center for Innovative Science

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is planning to build the $294 million Center for Innovative Science. The 350,000-sf facility will house 375 researchers and support staff. The project includes renovation of an existing 150,000-sf building and 200,000 sf of new construction. The Center for Innovative Science will accommodate research on personalized medicine, the biology of cancer and aging, and genetic and environmental factors that contribute to disease. Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System Plans Research Center and Vivarium

Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System is planning to build a $127 million basic science research center and vivarium in Palo Alto, Calif. Construction will begin in 2013 and reach completion within two years. The 143,000-sf facility will house flexible, open wet labs to promote researcher interaction and collaboration. A 31,500-sf animal research vivarium will be located in the basement.

Kaiser Permanente Opens Ontario Hospital

Kaiser Permanente will open a $550 million hospital in Ontario, Calif., on November 1, 2011. The five-story, 386,000-sf facility includes a 36-bed emergency department, two patient towers, and an attached medical office building. Construction began on the 224-bed hospital in 2008; the duration of construction was 40 months.

University of Michigan Completes C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital

The University of Michigan will open the $754 million C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital in Ann Arbor in November of 2011. The 1.1 million-sf building features entirely private rooms and 32 adult bone marrow transplant beds. The hospital comprises a 12-story inpatient wing and a 9-story outpatient wing. The facility provides 348 beds, 16 operating rooms, and two interventional radiology rooms. The duration of construction was five years.

University of Texas Health Science Center Dedicates Translational Research Facility

The University of Texas Health Science Center dedicated the $150 million South Texas Research Facility in San Antonio in October of 2011. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects to promote translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration, the three-story building houses open labs for up to 20 teams of investigators, each with eight members. The facility also provides research offices, a tissue culture, a core imaging suite, and a bioinformatics lab.
